Chapter 5: The Badge in the Hospital Room

Chapter 5: The Badge in the Hospital Room
Marcus stepped forward.
“She’s confused. She hit her head. She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”
Chloe’s mother looked at the nurse.
“Has a full injury report been started?”
Marcus snapped, “Excuse me?”
She ignored him.
“Photographs. Time stamps. Separate statements. No family members in the room during examination.”
Marcus’s face changed.
He was used to women crying.
Not women giving procedural instructions.
His mother stepped in.
“This is outrageous. You have no authority here.”
Chloe’s mother finally turned.
“I have enough.”
Then the police moved.
Marcus tried to push past them toward Chloe.
That was the moment the SWAT officers took him down against the wall.
Now, with his wrists locked and his mother frozen near the doorway, Marcus screamed, “She’s lying!”
And Chloe finally said the truth.
“Mom… they beat me.”
The room became evidence after that.
Every word mattered.
Every bruise mattered.
Every witness mattered.
The attorney opened his file beside the hospital bed.
Inside were printed screenshots, medical notes, photos Chloe had sent months ago, and transcripts from the emergency call.
Marcus’s mother tried to speak.
The police commander stopped her.
“You’ll have your chance to give a statement.”
She stiffened.
“I am a respected member of this community.”
Chloe’s mother looked at her.
“So were half the defendants I convicted.”
The older woman’s face went pale.
Marcus stared at Chloe like betrayal was the only crime in the room.
“You did this?”
Chloe’s voice was hoarse.
“No. You did.”
His mother snapped, “She poisoned you against us.”
Chloe turned her head slowly.
“You stood there.”
The words hit harder than shouting.
The nurse looked at Marcus’s mother with open disgust.
The doctor stepped forward.
“We need both of them removed from the treatment area.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“Both of us?”
The police commander looked at him.
“Yes. Both.”
That was when Marcus’s mother realized she was not a guest in a family dispute.
She was a subject in an investigation.
Her pearls did not help.
Her charity name did not help.
Her son’s money did not help.
The law was no longer something their family called when they needed control.
