Chapter 1 - Behind the Wardrobe

Vanessa Carter had one hand clamped over Lily’s mouth and the other locked around the six-year-old’s waist.
Lily kicked desperately.
“Dad... help!”
Vanessa dragged her farther from the huge antique wardrobe in the mansion storage room.
Boxes shook on the shelves.
Lily’s pale pink dress caught against a wooden crate.
Then the door slammed open.
Daniel Carter stormed inside.
The moment he saw his daughter struggling, something in his face changed.
He pulled Lily behind him and struck Vanessa with one hard slap.
She stumbled backward.
“Don’t touch her.”
Vanessa stared at him, stunned.
Lily clutched Daniel’s shirt with both hands and pointed frantically toward the wardrobe.
“Inside the wardrobe!”
Daniel turned.
The massive wardrobe had belonged to his grandfather. It had stood against that wall for decades.
He opened both doors.
Nothing.
Only coats, garment bags, and old blankets.
Vanessa suddenly moved toward him.
Daniel blocked her.
Lily pointed again.
Behind the clothes.
Daniel shoved the hanging garments aside.
He froze.
Someone had cut a rectangular hole through the wooden back panel.
Beyond it was darkness.
Not another room.
A narrow passage inside the wall.
Daniel leaned closer.
Vanessa went white.
Then—
BANG.
BANG.
BANG.
The sound came from somewhere deep inside the darkness.
Metal against metal.
Daniel’s entire body stiffened.
A weak voice came from behind what sounded like another door.
“Help me!”
Lily buried her face against his arm.
Daniel slowly looked at Vanessa.
She wasn’t confused.
She wasn’t frightened by the voice.
She was frightened that Daniel had heard it.
He reached for his phone.
Vanessa suddenly lunged toward the wardrobe.
Daniel caught her before she could reach it.
“Who is in there?”
Vanessa said nothing.
Another violent bang echoed from behind the wall.
This time Daniel heard something else.
A woman crying.
He grabbed a flashlight from a shelf and climbed through the opening.
The passage was only a few feet long.
At the end stood an old steel security door.
A padlock hung from the outside.
Daniel stared at it.
Someone had deliberately locked a person inside.
Then he noticed something lying on the floor beside the door.
A silver bracelet.
He recognized it immediately.
It belonged to his younger sister, Rachel.
May you like
Rachel had supposedly flown to Chicago four days ago.
👉 Daniel had spoken to “Rachel” by text that morning—but her bracelet was lying outside a locked room inside his own house.
