Chapter 8

Ethan shoved the phone into his pocket.

“This is insane.”

The attorney handed him a final page.

“There will be a hearing. Until then, all contact with Madison must go through counsel. Any attempt to pressure her, threaten her, or remove the child will be documented.”

Ethan looked at Madison like he expected her to fold.

That had worked before.

When he ignored her.

When he let his mother insult her.

When he made her apologize just to keep peace in the house.

When he told her she was too sensitive.

Too emotional.

Too needy.

But motherhood had changed the shape of her fear.

She was not just protecting her own heart anymore.

She was protecting the small sleeping body against her chest.

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Madison, come on. Don’t embarrass me.”

There it was.

Not “I’m sorry.”

Not “Is he okay?”

Not “I should have been there.”

Don’t embarrass me.

Madison’s face softened, but only because the last piece of hope had finally died.

“You embarrassed yourself,” she said.

The security officer opened the door.

“Sir, it’s time to leave.”

Ethan looked at his son one more time.

For half a second, Madison thought he might break.

Maybe apologize.

Maybe say the one thing that could not fix everything but could at least prove he understood what he had done.

Instead, he said,

“My mother is going to be devastated.”

Madison closed her eyes.

When she opened them again, her voice was quiet.

“Good. Now she’ll know how it feels to be put second.”

Ethan was escorted out.

The gift bag stayed behind on the floor.

Madison asked the nurse to throw it away.

By that evening, Ethan’s family had started calling.

His mother left voicemail after voicemail.

Some angry.

Some crying.

Some claiming Madison was “keeping the baby from his rightful family.”

Madison did not respond.

Her attorney did.

The hospital documented every call.

Every threat.

Every attempt to pressure staff for information.

When Ethan’s mother showed up at the NICU demanding to see “her grandson,” security removed her from the floor.
