Chapter 2

PART 2:

The man in the navy jacket stepped closer with his phone raised.

“I told you. He’s dangerous. Look at him.”

“Sir, step back,” Keller said.

The man ignored him.

“He’s probably been sitting here all day waiting to hurt somebody.”

Thomas closed his eyes.

The words hit him harder than fists.

He had been called many things in his life.

Soldier.

Sergeant.

Survivor.

Crazy old man.

But dangerous to children?

That one broke something inside him.

Max pawed again, gentler this time.

The blanket shifted.

Keller saw it.

A strip of faded tan webbing.

Old.

Frayed.

Military-grade.

Not a rifle sling.

Not a bomb vest.

A harness.

Keller’s grip loosened.

“Wait,” he said quietly. “That’s not a weapon.”

The crowd began to quiet.

Max lowered his nose under the blanket and gave one soft whine.

Keller crouched beside the bench.

“Sir,” he said carefully, “what’s under the blanket?”

Thomas shook his head.

His tears fell faster.

“He doesn’t like crowds anymore.”

“Who doesn’t?”

Thomas looked at Max.

Then at Keller.

“My partner.”

Keller’s chest tightened.

He reached slowly for the edge of the blanket.

Thomas grabbed his wrist.

Not hard.

Just pleading.

“He was proud,” Thomas whispered. “Don’t let them look at him like he’s trash.”

Keller’s voice softened.

“I won’t.”

Thomas stared at him for a long second.

Then his hand let go.

Keller lifted the blanket.

The crowd went silent.

Underneath lay an old German Shepherd.

Thin.

Gray around the muzzle.

His breathing was shallow, his body trembling under a faded military K9 harness that looked older than some of the officers in the park.

One ear was marked with a small tattoo.

Keller leaned closer.

His face changed.

The harness patch was worn almost smooth, but the letters were still there.

MWD RANGER.

U.S. ARMY.

Keller swallowed hard.

“That’s a military K9.”

Thomas broke.

He folded over the dog and held him like a child.

“He was my partner.”

Max lowered his head and licked the old dog’s face.

Ranger’s eyes opened just a little.

His tail moved once.

Barely.

May you like

But it moved.

👉 And when Keller touched Ranger’s neck, he realized this wasn’t just an old dog under a blanket…
