Chapter 7

Inside, the house smelled like Mark.

Coffee.

Cedar soap.

The faint wood smoke from the fireplace he loved.

Julia placed the bag near the stairs and finally slid Mark’s ring back onto her finger.

It felt loose now.

Everything did.

Life.

The house.

The future.

The attorney stood quietly by the entryway.

“There is one more thing,” he said.

Julia looked up.

He handed her the brown envelope.

“You should open it.”

Her hands trembled as she broke the seal.

Inside was a letter.

Mark’s handwriting filled the page.

My Jules,

If you’re reading this, I’m sorry.

Not because I left you. I fought as hard as I could not to.

I’m sorry because they made you fight on a day you should have been allowed to grieve.

You never needed me to protect you because you were weak.

You needed protection because good people get tired when cruel people keep testing them.

So I did what I should have done years ago.

The house is yours.

The girls are safe.

The trust is locked.

My parents cannot touch any of it.

And if they tried, then I need you to stop carrying my guilt for me.

I loved them. But loving them never meant letting them hurt you.

Julia covered her mouth as the words blurred.

The girls leaned against her legs.

She kept reading.

Tell our daughters I did not leave them empty-handed.

I left them the home where they took their first steps.

I left them money for school.

I left them every birthday letter I could write before my hands got too tired.

And I left them the strongest mother I have ever known.

Do not let anyone make you smaller after I’m gone.

Especially not in my name.

I love you.

I loved you first.

I will love you last.

Mark.

Julia sank onto the bottom stair.

The sob that came out of her had been waiting all day.

Maybe longer.

Her girls climbed into her lap from both sides, and all three of them cried together in the front hallway while the afternoon sun poured through the glass.

For the first time since the funeral, Julia did not feel like she was falling alone.

Mark was gone.

May you like

But his love had stood up in that doorway when she could not.

👉 In the weeks that followed, the truth spread — and Mark’s father lost the one thing he had protected more than family.
