Chapter 4

PART 4:
His father stepped forward first.
“Logan,” he said slowly, “what is she talking about?”
Logan did not look at him.
“She’s lying.”
The lawyer opened the folder.
“No, she isn’t.”
She pulled out the divorce agreement and turned it toward Logan’s family.
Logan lunged forward, but stopped when he saw the lawyer’s expression.
“This is private,” he said.
“You made it public when you brought your entire family here to shame her,” the lawyer replied.
The words cut through the street.
Sienna looked at Logan.
“You said she was squatting.”
Logan’s jaw flexed.
“She was.”
His ex-wife shook her head.
“I moved out six weeks ago.”
Logan’s mother looked stunned.
“Six weeks?”
The ex-wife nodded.
“The house was empty. He knew it was empty.”
Sienna pulled her hand away from Logan’s arm.
“You told me she was sleeping in the master bedroom to punish us.”
Logan turned sharply.
“Not now, Sienna.”
But Sienna was already looking at the empty lot.
Then at the folder.
Then at the two children standing beside her car.
Her voice dropped.
“You brought my kids here for this.”
Logan said nothing.
That silence answered everything.
The lawyer handed Logan a copy of the stamped removal order.
“The county confirmed the structure was cleared legally after you failed to respond. The demolition and removal costs are now attached to you under the agreement you signed.”
Logan blinked.
“What costs?”
The lawyer turned one page.
“Thirty-eight thousand, seven hundred dollars.”
His mother gasped.
His brother muttered, “Logan…”
Logan snatched the paper.
His eyes raced across the numbers.
“You can’t charge me for tearing down my own house.”
“You owned the structure,” the lawyer said. “And you failed to remove it from land you did not own.”
His ex-wife finally stepped closer.
Not much.
Just enough for him to hear her without shouting.
“You wanted the house so badly because you thought it would prove you won,” she said. “So I gave you exactly what the agreement said was yours.”
Logan stared at her.
“You destroyed it to hurt me.”
“No,” she said. “I cleared my father’s land.”
For the first time, his expression shifted.
Not anger.
Fear.
Because the word father carried a weight Logan had always ignored.
That land was not just dirt.
It was the last thing her father had left her.
And Logan had tried to use it as a stage for her humiliation.
His mother covered her mouth.
“I didn’t know it was your father’s land,” she whispered.
His ex-wife looked at her.
“You never asked. You just believed him.”
The older woman’s face crumpled.
Because she had believed every version Logan gave her.
She had called her former daughter-in-law selfish.
Bitter.
Ungrateful.
She had told relatives that Logan’s ex was “trying to hold on to a man who had moved on.”
