Chapter 2

Then she looked down at her wrist.
The nurse followed her gaze.
Four dark finger marks circled one side.
A thumb-shaped bruise sat on the other.
Not a fall.
Not a shower.
A grip.
The wife lifted one trembling finger and pointed toward Ethan’s phone lying on the metal tray beside the bed.
The screen lit up.
Cloud backup complete.
Ethan’s face changed.
He reached for the phone.
Fast.
Too fast.
The wife whispered, “Check the cloud.”
The nurse covered her mouth.
Before Ethan’s hand touched the phone, the ER door opened hard.
A man in navy scrubs stepped inside.
Chief Doctor Liam.
He stopped after one step.
His eyes landed on the woman in the bed.
The bruises.
The blood at her lip.
The fear in her face.
Then recognition hit him so hard he looked like he had been struck.
“Liam…” she breathed.
His pain turned instantly into something colder.
He stepped forward and caught Ethan’s wrist before Ethan could grab the phone.
Ethan tried to smile.
“Doctor, there’s been a misunderstanding.”
Liam did not blink.
“That’s my sister.”
The room went silent.
Down the hall, two police officers were already running toward the curtain.
Ethan’s face drained of color.
Liam looked at the nurse, but his eyes never left Ethan.
“Lock this room down.”
Ethan took one step back.
Then another.
And for the first time since he had dragged his wife through the ER doors, he realized the woman he thought he had broken had not come alone.

The truth had followed her.
👉 But two years earlier, Ethan had entered her life pretending to be the man who would protect her peace.
