Chapter 4 - Emily at the Doorway

Emily did not move when the deputies entered.

She stood in the doorway between the kitchen and the garage with both hands over her mouth, eyes wide, face drained of color.

Michael looked at her once.

Only once.

He wanted to be angry.

Part of him was.

How could she let this happen?

How could she stand there while their father lay on the concrete?

But then he saw the fading bruise near her collarbone.

The way her shoulders curled inward.

The way she flinched when Carter turned his head.

Michael understood.

Not everything.

But enough.

The lead deputy stepped toward Carter.

“Hands where I can see them.”

Carter recovered quickly.

Men like him always did.

“This is a misunderstanding,” he said. “The old man fell. My brother-in-law is emotional.”

Henry tried to speak.

A deputy knelt beside him.

“Sir, don’t move yet. EMS is on the way.”

Denise Parker from Adult Protective Services looked around the garage.

Her face changed as she took in the cot beside the water heater, the thin blanket, the pill bottles under the workbench, the dirty laundry in a plastic bin.

“Mr. Lawson lives out here?” she asked.

Carter scoffed.

“He prefers it. Says he likes the quiet.”

Michael turned on him.

“Dad hates the cold.”

Carter lifted his hands.

“See? Family drama.”

Denise looked at Emily.

“Mrs. Wells, does your father live in this garage?”

Emily’s lips parted.

No sound came out.

Carter stared at her.

“Emily.”

One word.

A warning.

Her body tightened.

Henry, still on the floor, reached weakly toward her.

“Em…”

That broke her.

Emily began crying.

“Yes,” she whispered. “Carter made him sleep here.”

Carter’s face went hard.

“Careful.”

The deputy stepped closer to him.

“Sir, do not threaten her.”

Emily’s voice shook harder.

“He takes Dad’s pension. He says if Dad leaves, we lose the house. He says if I tell Michael, he’ll have Dad declared incompetent.”

Carter lunged forward.

“I never said that.”

Michael picked up the black watch from the tool bench.

The red light still blinked.

“Yes,” he said. “You did.”

Carter stared at it.

For the first time, he looked truly trapped.

EMS arrived and lifted Henry onto a stretcher.

Henry grabbed Michael’s hand before they carried him out.

“Don’t leave Emily,” he whispered.

Michael leaned close.

“I won’t.”

Henry’s eyes filled.

“I should’ve told you sooner.”

Michael shook his head.

“You told me when you could.”

As they wheeled Henry past the kitchen, Carter tried one last time.

“You’re all overreacting. He’s old. He gets confused.”

Denise Parker turned to him.

“Then it’s unfortunate for you that the recording sounds very clear.”

Carter said nothing.

Emily finally stepped out of the doorway and crossed the garage.

She stood beside Michael, shaking.

Not free yet.

May you like

But no longer standing behind Carter.

👉 Emily had stayed silent out of fear, but once Henry reached for her, Carter’s control over the house began to crack.
