Chapter 1

PART 1:

Julian slammed his palm against the glass door so hard the blinds shook.

Madeline flinched on the hospital bed.

Her right leg was strapped into a stabilizer from thigh to ankle.

One side of her face was bruised purple.

Her fingers dug into the bedsheet as pain pulsed through her body with every breath.

Julian pushed into the room like he owned the hospital.

“It’s a fracture,” he snapped. “Not an excuse.”

Behind him, his mother stood in the doorway clutching her chest, dressed in pearls and a cream cardigan, performing weakness for every doctor and nurse nearby.

“I haven’t eaten all day because of you,” she said.

Madeline stared at them.

She had been hit by a car six hours earlier.

She had woken up under fluorescent lights with a doctor telling her not to move.

And still, the first thing her husband cared about was dinner.

A nurse stepped forward.

“Sir, you need to lower your voice.”

Julian ignored her.

He pointed at Madeline.

“My mother is diabetic. She needs meals on time. But my wife always finds a way to make everything about herself.”

Madeline’s mouth tasted like blood.

She tried to sit up, but pain shot through her hip.

“I was hit by a car,” she said.

Julian laughed.

A short, cruel sound.

“You’re still making this about you?”

His mother wiped at dry eyes.

“She does this. She panics. She exaggerates. Then Julian has to fix everything.”

Madeline slowly turned her head toward the bedside table.

Her phone was there.

The screen was cracked from the accident.

Dozens of missed calls from Julian filled the lock screen.

Not one message asking if she was alive.

Only demands.

Where are you?

Mom is hungry.

Stop ignoring me.

If you don’t come back, I’m calling the police.

You don’t get to abandon this family.

Madeline looked from the phone to the medical folder beside her bed.

Then to the X-ray clipped on the light board.

“The report says everything,” she said.

The doctor, who had been standing silently near the foot of the bed, looked at Julian with a colder expression now.

“She cannot walk.”

Julian opened his mouth.

Before he could speak, two police officers stepped into the room with a nurse behind them.

One officer held a printed report.

He looked at Julian.

“Your domestic complaint doesn’t match the medical evidence.”

Julian froze.

His mother stopped pretending to cry.

Madeline reached for her phone with a shaking hand.

Julian turned sharply.

“What are you doing?”

Madeline unlocked it with her thumb.

Her voice was weak.

But calm.

“Freeze the account.”

His mother’s mouth dropped open.

Julian stared at her like the bed had disappeared beneath him.

“What account?”

Madeline looked at him.

May you like

“The one you thought I was too broken to protect.”

👉 But three years earlier, Julian had entered Madeline’s life looking like the one man who wanted to help her rest.
