Eight months later, Derek sat in a Miami courtroom wearing a dark suit that no longer made him look powerful.
The charges included aggravated financial exploitation, forgery, fraud, witness intimidation, and domestic battery.
Suzanne accepted a plea agreement.
In exchange for reduced charges, she surrendered financial records, messages, and recordings of Derek discussing the apartment scheme.
She also admitted notarizing documents Skylar had never signed.
The evidence was overwhelming.
Bank records showed that Derek had taken more than $1.7 million from accounts funded by Skylar’s inheritance.
He used the money to rescue failing projects, lease luxury vehicles, purchase gifts for Suzanne, and maintain the appearance of success.
His company had been insolvent for almost two years.
The apartment transfer was supposed to save him.
Instead, it exposed him.
When Skylar took the witness stand, Derek refused to look at her.
The prosecutor asked why she had remained silent for so long.
Skylar answered honestly.
“Because he never began with violence.”
She looked at the jury.
“He began by helping. Then he made every decision. Then he made me feel guilty for asking questions. By the time he hurt me physically, he had already convinced me I could not trust myself.”
The courtroom was silent.
The recording from the kitchen was played.

Derek closed his eyes.
His own voice destroyed every defense he had built.
The jury found him guilty on all major counts.
Suzanne lost her professional license and received probation, community service, and restitution obligations under her cooperation agreement.
Derek was sentenced to prison and ordered to repay the stolen funds through liquidation of his remaining assets.
When the judge finished, Derek finally turned toward Skylar.
He looked smaller than she remembered.
Not because prison had changed him.
Because she no longer saw him through fear.
Outside the courthouse, reporters waited.
Skylar declined every interview.
She did not want fame.
She wanted her life back.
