Chapter 13 - The Promotion She Never Received
The promotion board had selected Rebecca for captain.
She had been required to confirm acceptance within thirty days.
The notice was delivered while she was attending treatment for deployment-related trauma.
Daniel signed for the envelope.
He never gave it to her.
When no response came, the Navy assumed Rebecca intended to retire quietly.
She left active service the following year.
Rebecca stared at the delivery receipt.
Daniel’s signature was unmistakable.
She confronted him during a counseling session.
Lily was not present.
“You opened this?”
Daniel looked at the paper.
His face drained.
“I don’t remember.”
“You signed for it.”
“I signed for hundreds of things.”
“The envelope said Department of the Navy.”
He rubbed his hands together.
Rebecca waited.
Silence had always been her strongest interrogation technique.
Finally, he whispered, “You had just come home.”
“That does not answer me.”
“You weren’t sleeping. You barely ate. Lily cried whenever you left the room.”
“So you hid my promotion?”
“I thought it would send you away again.”
“You made that decision for me.”
“I was trying to save our family.”
Rebecca’s jaw tightened.
“No. You were trying to control which version of me was allowed to exist.”
Daniel began defending himself.
“You would have accepted.”
“I might have.”
“That proves I was right.”
“No. It proves you feared my choice.”
He looked toward the counselor.
“I was alone for years.”
The counselor replied gently.
“Being abandoned emotionally can create fear. It does not justify removing another adult’s agency.”
Daniel lowered his head.
Rebecca felt grief more than anger.
The promotion could not simply be restored.
Years had passed.
Her active-duty path had ended.
A career she might have chosen was gone.
But something unexpected happened.
The Navy reviewed the case and determined Rebecca’s nonresponse had resulted from documented interference.
She could not return to the exact promotion track.
However, she was offered a senior civilian position overseeing underwater rescue training and veteran transition programs.
The role allowed her to serve without returning to extended deployments.
For the first time, Rebecca could combine the parts of herself Daniel had treated as enemies.

She asked Lily what she thought.
“Will you have to miss my birthday?”
Rebecca smiled.
“No.”
“Will you teach people how to save sailors?”
“Yes.”
“Then take it.”
Rebecca accepted.
Master Chief Mercer presented the delayed commendation at a formal ceremony several weeks later.
Lily stood beside him holding the repaired essay.
When Rebecca stepped forward, Mercer handed her Elias’s challenge coin.
“This belongs with you.”
Rebecca closed her fingers around it.
Then she shook her head.
She turned toward Lily and placed the coin in her daughter’s palm.
“Never apologize for telling the truth.”
The audience rose.
But beyond the ceremony, another decision waited.
Rebecca had to determine whether Daniel’s interference should become part of the legal custody case.
