Chapter 5 - The Safe Deposit Box

The key belonged to a private vault at First Atlantic Bank.
Matteo arrived the next morning with Elena, Thomas, and Samuel Grant, the independent attorney now representing Luca’s interests.
The bank manager disappeared into the vault.
When she returned, she carried a narrow metal box.
Matteo’s name was not on it.
Neither was Elena’s.
It belonged to Alessandro Russo.
Access instructions named Thomas Bellini as emergency legal custodian.
Thomas inserted the key.
Inside were three envelopes.
One for Matteo.
One for Elena.
One labeled:
FOR MY GRANDSON, LUCA.
Elena covered her mouth.
Matteo opened his.
His father’s handwriting appeared.
Matteo,
If you are reading this, someone has tried to make you believe my final estate plan never existed.
Do not fight your mother with anger.
Fight her with proof.
Matteo almost laughed bitterly.
His father knew him too well.
The letter continued.
Carlo has been reckless.
Your mother has protected him because she believes control is more important than honesty.
I will not leave the company to either of them.
I am placing my controlling shares in trust for Luca.
You and Elena must protect those shares together.
Do not surrender either signature.
Matteo stopped.
Elena looked at him.
The final paragraph was worse.
If Viola challenges the trust, ask Thomas for Exhibit C.
Matteo looked up.
“What is Exhibit C?”
Thomas slowly opened the third envelope.
A digital storage card slid into his palm.
“My God,” he whispered.
Samuel frowned.
“What?”
Thomas looked at Matteo.
“Your father recorded the meeting when Viola found out about the trust.”
Matteo stared.
“Why?”
“Because he expected her to challenge his capacity.”
They played the recording in the attorney’s office.
Alessandro’s voice sounded tired but steady.
“Luca gets the controlling shares.”
Viola exploded.
“You would hand the company to a baby?”
“I am protecting it from Carlo.”
“And from me?”
A pause.
“From what you become when Carlo is involved.”
Then Carlo’s voice appeared.
“You’re destroying us.”
“No. I’m stopping you from destroying everyone else.”
Viola’s voice became icy.
“You’ll regret this.”
Alessandro answered:
“No. You will.”
The recording ended.
Silence filled the room.
Samuel looked at Matteo.
“With this, the trust documents, and Thomas’s testimony, Viola cannot credibly claim the arrangement was fabricated.”
Elena shook her head.
“She nearly hurt Luca for control of a company he won’t even understand for years.”
Matteo looked at the envelope bearing his son’s name.
“No.”
May you like
His voice became cold.
“She did it because she thought we would still protect the family name.”
