Chapter 9

PART 9:
On the first anniversary of Jacob’s return, snow fell again.
This time softly.
This time from inside a warm house.
Emily stood by the window holding their daughter, now walking unsteadily and laughing at the snow like it had never hurt her.
Jacob came up behind them and wrapped both in his arms.
Outside, the front steps were clean.
No suitcases.
No locked door.
No one telling them they were not family.
Their daughter pressed her tiny hand to the glass.
“Snow,” she said.
Emily smiled through tears.
“Yes, baby. Snow.”
Jacob kissed the side of Emily’s head.
“Are you okay?”
She looked at the driveway where he had appeared through the storm.
Then at the door he had taken back for them.
“I am now.”
That night, Jacob placed the old useless key in a small wooden box.
The one that no longer opened the door.
Emily asked why he kept it.
He looked at her, then at their sleeping daughter.
“So we never forget what a locked door taught us.”
Emily leaned against him.
“What did it teach you?”
Jacob closed the box.
“That a house isn’t family just because your name is on it.”
He looked toward the nursery.
May you like
“Family is who you refuse to leave in the cold.”
If you were Emily, would you ever allow Jacob’s parents back into your daughter’s life after what they did in the snow?
