PART 3: The Dress Vanessa Wanted

PART 3: The Dress Vanessa Wanted

Vanessa arrived at the wedding weekend with three suitcases and one goal.

Control.

She swept into the hotel suite where Rebecca was getting ready and immediately looked at the uniform hanging near the window.

Her smile vanished.

“You’re wearing that?”

Rebecca was seated near the vanity while a stylist pinned her dark hair into a clean low bun.

“Yes.”

Vanessa laughed softly.

“To your wedding?”

Rebecca met her eyes in the mirror.

“It’s a military chapel. Daniel is in uniform. Half the guests are service members.”

“That’s different.”

“How?”

Vanessa walked closer and touched one sleeve with two fingers, like it was dirty.

“Because Daniel looks handsome in his. You look like you’re trying to prove something.”

Rebecca’s bridesmaid, Lieutenant Grace Miller, stiffened.

Rebecca gave her the smallest look.

Don’t.

Grace stayed silent.

Vanessa circled the room slowly.

“I brought you another dress.”

“No.”

“You haven’t seen it.”

“I said no.”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“It’s ivory. Elegant. Feminine. Mom cried when she saw it.”

Rebecca turned from the mirror.

“Mom cries when grocery stores move the cereal aisle.”

Grace almost smiled.

Vanessa did not.

“You think this is funny?”

“No,” Rebecca said. “I think it’s my wedding.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You always do this.”

Rebecca stood.

“Do what?”

“Make everyone uncomfortable and then call it strength.”

The room went quiet.

Rebecca’s mother entered at the worst possible moment.

Evelyn Hayes took one look at the uniform and placed a hand on her chest.

“Oh, Rebecca.”

Rebecca closed her eyes for half a second.

“Mom.”

Evelyn’s voice trembled.

“I thought Vanessa spoke to you.”

“She did.”

“And?”

“And I’m still wearing it.”

Evelyn looked wounded, as if Rebecca had personally ruined her heart.

“Sweetheart, can’t you just look like a bride today?”

Grace’s face tightened.

Rebecca’s voice stayed calm.

“I am a bride.”

Vanessa smiled coldly.

“You know what she means.”

Rebecca turned to her.

“Yes. I do.”

That was the problem.

They wanted her softer.

Smaller.

Easier to explain.

The daughter who served, but not too visibly.

The woman who sacrificed, but did not make anyone uncomfortable by carrying proof.

Then Rebecca’s father entered.

Thomas Hayes looked at the uniform, then at the medals laid carefully on the table.

His expression changed.

Not pride.

Irritation.

“Is all that necessary?”

Rebecca felt something inside her go still.

Daniel had offered to handle her family.

She had refused.

She had told herself she was too old to need protection from people who raised her.

Now she stood in a hotel suite surrounded by relatives who looked at her life like it was an embarrassing costume.

Thomas pointed at the medals.

“People will think you’re trying to outshine your groom.”

Rebecca’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“Daniel helped pin them.”

Evelyn looked confused.

“He did?”

“Yes.”

Because Daniel understood what her family never had.

Those medals were not decoration.

They were names.

Nights.

Loss.

Responsibility.

Survival.

Vanessa picked up the bouquet from the table.

White roses and lilies.

Beautiful.

Simple.

Rebecca’s choice.

Vanessa smiled.

“At least this part looks normal.”

Rebecca took the bouquet gently from her sister’s hand.

“Normal was never the goal.”

Vanessa leaned in.

“Then don’t cry when people stare.”

Rebecca looked at her reflection one last time.

Uniform.

Medals.

Four stars.

Bride.

General.

Woman.

Whole.

“I’m done crying where you can enjoy it,” she said.

May you like

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

👉 Vanessa failed to make Rebecca change before the ceremony, so she decided to humiliate her in front of everyone instead.
