Chapter 11 - The Grave

Richard Hayes was buried in a private family cemetery on the northern edge of the estate.
Agatha visited every Sunday.
She brought white roses.
For fourteen years she had stood within feet of the evidence that could expose her.
Martin had hidden the recording inside the stone base of Richard’s memorial bench.
Conrad almost admired the cruelty of the choice.
Police recovered it before dawn.
The original device was not a cassette.
It was a small digital recorder sealed in waterproof wrapping.
Forensic technicians copied the audio.
Conrad listened beside Sloan.
The recording began with a car door closing.
Footsteps.
Then Julian.
“You shouldn’t have come.”
A man answered.
Thomas.
“You called me.”
“I said we had a problem.”
Agatha’s voice appeared next.
“The problem is Caroline.”
Conrad gripped the table.
Caroline whispered near the recorder.
They did not know she was listening.
Julian said, “She has financial records.”
Thomas replied, “Then get them back.”
“She gave copies to Bell.”
Agatha said, “Nathan can be managed.”
Julian laughed.
“Like Martin?”
“Exactly.”
Then Thomas asked the question that changed everything.
“What about Richard’s toxicology file?”
Silence.
Agatha answered.
“She doesn’t have it.”
“You said the same thing about the account ledgers.”
“I handled Richard fourteen years ago. I can handle his daughter-in-law.”
Conrad felt Sloan glance at him.
He did not move.
Thomas said, “You handled Richard because I changed the pills. Don’t rewrite history.”
There.
The confession.
Agatha responded sharply.
“And you were paid very well.”
Julian interrupted.
“Stop talking about this.”
Then Caroline’s breathing changed.
A floorboard creaked.
Julian said, “What was that?”
Running footsteps.
A door slammed.
The recording became chaotic.
Caroline gasped.
Wind.
Car engine.
Then her voice.
“Conrad, if you ever hear this, I’m sorry.”
Conrad closed his eyes.
She was driving.
“I should have told you sooner.”
A horn sounded behind her.
She breathed faster.
“They’re following me.”
Another horn.
Then Caroline shouted.
“Thomas, stop!”
Tires screamed.
The recording struck something.
Caroline cried out.
The audio ended.
Nobody spoke.
Conrad stared at the waveform frozen on the computer screen.
Sloan eventually said, “We have enough to arrest Thomas if we find him.”
“And Agatha?”
“Conspiracy, financial crimes, potentially murder depending on corroboration.”
“Julian?”
“Fraud, obstruction, possible accessory charges.”
Conrad stood.
He needed air.
Outside, dawn spread over the trees.
His phone rang.
Elliot.
Nathan had stayed with him.
“Dad?”
“Hey, buddy.”
“Did you find the secret?”
Conrad looked toward the cemetery.
“Yes.”
“Was Mom right?”
His throat tightened.
“She was.”
A long silence.
“Did Grandma hurt her?”
Conrad could not lie.
“She helped people do terrible things.”
“What about Uncle Julian?”
“He did too.”
Elliot whispered, “Are you coming home?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Soon.”
“Promise?”
Conrad smiled through tears.
“Promise.”
Before he could leave, Sloan stepped outside.
“Conrad.”
Something in her expression stopped him.
“What?”
“We found Thomas Vale.”
“Where?”
She held up her phone.
A traffic camera image showed a black SUV entering Hayes Manor less than twenty minutes earlier.
Conrad stared.
“Why would he go there?”
Sloan’s phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression hardened.
May you like
Then she looked at Conrad.
“Because Agatha is there.”
