PART 6

Keller was not camera-ready.

He looked tired, sunburned, and mean in the way good commanders sometimes looked when they had spent too many years burying men because other people wanted clean reports.

Hale stiffened.

“General Keller,” he said. “This is an active operation.”

Keller looked at the rifle pile.

Then at me.

Then at the screen.

“So I see.”

Hale tried to recover.

“Commander Hayes refused a lawful order and incited a unit-wide breakdown of discipline.”

Keller walked to the map table.

His eyes moved over my sidearm, my radio, the target marker, and Hale’s spotless boots.

Then he looked at Chief Briggs.

“Chief, why is your weapon on the floor?”

Briggs stood straight.

“Because Commander Hayes identified a concealed ambush, sir. General Hale ordered us into it anyway.”

Keller looked at the screen again.

The basin was now fully surrounded.

Archangel’s men waited on four sides, exactly where I said they would be.

Keller turned to Hale.

“Preston, would you like to explain why your capture plan appears to have been known in advance by the enemy?”

Hale’s mouth opened.

No answer came.

The NCIS investigator stepped forward and placed a tablet on the table.

“General Hale,” she said, “your operational briefing was transmitted to an unsecured liaison channel eighteen minutes before your arrival at Iron Ridge.”

Hale’s eyes flashed.

“That is impossible.”

“No,” she said. “It is recorded.”

The room changed again.

Not confusion now.

Recognition.

Hale had not planned the ambush.

But his arrogance had delivered the invitation.

He had sent details over a channel he knew was politically convenient but tactically exposed, because he wanted allied officials and Washington staffers ready to celebrate a clean capture.

He wanted applause staged before the operation began.

Archangel heard it first.

Keller’s voice dropped.

“You compromised the operation.”

Hale pointed at me.

“She delayed it. She created this chaos.”

“She saved it,” Keller said.

Hale’s face tightened.

“She disobeyed me.”

May you like

Keller stepped closer.

“And thank God she did.”
