Chapter 12 - The Man Who Had Been Dead Fourteen Years

They found Ethan Cole at sunrise.
He stood alone beside a grave carrying white lilies.
Fifty-two.
Gray beginning at the temples.
A scar across his neck.
Jack watched from twenty yards away.
Fourteen years earlier he had attended Ethan's memorial.
No body had been recovered after an overseas convoy explosion.
Now Ethan turned.
Saw Jack.
Closed his eyes.
"Sergeant."
Jack walked toward him.
"You people need new greetings."
Ethan almost smiled.
Then Jack hit him.
One punch.
Controlled.
Ethan staggered.
Laura shouted:
"Jack!"
He raised both hands.
"Finished."
Ethan wiped blood from his lip.
"I deserved that."
"You deserve more."
"I know."
"Why are you alive?"
Ethan looked toward his mother's grave.
"Because Victor Mercer tried to kill me."
"Why?"
"I stole his records."
"The chip."
"Part of them."
"What's the rest?"
Ethan looked at Jack.
"Safe."
"Where?"
"No."
Jack's jaw tightened.
Laura stepped in.
"Hannah Miller was assaulted because of this."
Ethan's expression changed.
"I tried stopping them."
"With emails?"
"I couldn't expose myself."
Jack laughed.
"My daughter has broken ribs because you couldn't expose yourself."
Ethan flinched.
"I never authorized Rick targeting her."
"Did Mercer?"
"Cole did."
Jack frowned.
"Cole Mercer?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"His father is dying."
Laura looked confused.
"So?"
Ethan explained.
"Victor built the original network. Cole inherited it. But he doesn't have all the records."
"The file."
"Exactly."
"Why is Miller important?"
"Because I hid the decryption key in material connected to Jack."
Jack stared.
"You used me."
"Yes."
"Without telling me."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because nobody would expect it."
Jack laughed bitterly.
"Apparently everybody expected it."
Ethan looked ashamed.
"Not at first."
Laura asked:
"Where is the decryption key?"
Ethan looked at Jack.
"Your training archive."
"What archive?"
"The handwritten combat manuals you kept."
Jack's face changed.
He still had them.
Boxes in his home.
"What exactly?"
"Page numbers."
"Which?"
"I'll tell you."
Jack stepped closer.
"You will tell police everything."
Ethan nodded.
"In exchange for protection."
Laura said:
"You don't get to dictate terms."
"I have names inside federal agencies."
Silence.
Laura studied him.
"Can you prove that?"
"Yes."
"Then start."
Ethan looked at Jack.
"Rick Dalton isn't the real threat."
"We know."
"Cole Mercer isn't either."
Jack frowned.
"Then who?"
Ethan looked around the cemetery.
"Victor's network survived because somebody protected it."
"Who?"
"I only know a designation."
"Which is?"
"Atlas."
Anthony, standing with another officer, went pale.
Jack noticed.
"You know that name."
Anthony shook his head.
Too quickly.
Jack stepped toward him.
"Anthony."
"I've heard it."
"Where?"
"1993."
Jack froze.
"What?"
Anthony looked at Ethan.
Ethan looked back.
Neither wanted to speak.
Jack's patience broke.
"One of you."
Ethan sighed.
"Atlas funded the private security program Rick joined after discharge."
"Who was Atlas?"
"We never knew."
Anthony whispered:
"But Atlas knew you."
Jack stared.
"Me?"
Anthony nodded.
"Rick wasn't recruited because he was talented."
"Then why?"
"Because he hated you."
Jack felt the old story changing again.
His testimony.
Rick's discharge.
Mercer's recruitment.
None of it had been random.
Someone had been watching.
For decades.
Laura asked:
"What would Atlas want from Jack Miller?"
Ethan looked directly at Jack.
"The same thing everyone wanted."
"What?"
"His training system."
Jack shook his head.
"You keep saying that like I invented some secret weapon."
"You invented a way to train frightened men to act under pressure."
"That's military instruction."
"Not the version you taught."
Jack stared.
Ethan continued.
"You taught decision-making under panic."
"So?"
"Atlas adapted it."
"For interrogation?"
"For control."
Jack's face hardened.
"People aren't systems."
Ethan whispered:
"Atlas disagrees."
Then Laura's phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed.
"What?"
Everyone waited.
She looked at Jack.
"Rick Dalton was found."
"Where?"
"At the Forge warehouse."
"Alive?"
Laura paused.
"Yes."
Jack understood from her face there was more.
"What happened?"
"Someone beat him nearly unconscious."
Silence.
"And left a message."
"What message?"
Laura looked toward Ethan.
May you like
Then Anthony.
"Tell Miller the debt is older than Hannah."
