Chapter 1 - THE CAMERA ABOVE THE CRIB

The glass jar was already tilted over Elara’s crib when June saw it.

“Meredith!”

Meredith Carter spun around.

For one split second, her face showed something June had never seen before.

Not surprise.

Panic.

June didn’t stop to think.

She rushed across the nursery and kicked Meredith’s arm away.

The jar flew across the room and shattered against the wall.

Whatever had been inside splashed across the wallpaper and carpet.

Elara screamed.

“Don’t touch my child!”

June ran straight to the crib.

She bent over her ten-month-old daughter, wrapping both arms around her tiny body.

“It’s okay, baby. Mommy’s here.”

Then the nursery door burst open.

Caleb.

His eyes went first to the shattered glass.

Then Meredith.

Then June leaning over Elara.

Meredith screamed.

“She’s hurting the baby!”

Caleb reacted before June could speak.

His fist struck June across the face.

The force knocked her backward.

Her heavy body crashed into the side of the crib.

Wood cracked.

One railing collapsed beneath her.

June hit the floor beside it.

For a moment, she couldn’t hear anything except ringing.

Caleb rushed toward Elara.

“Stay away from my kid!”

June stared up at him.

Her husband.

The man who had kissed her forehead that morning.

The man who had promised, ten months earlier, that nothing in the world would ever come between them and their daughter.

He had just punched her while she was protecting Elara.

Meredith stood behind him.

“She was trying to hurt the baby!”

June tasted blood inside her mouth.

She could barely speak.

But then she saw it.

Above them.

The ceiling security camera.

June slowly lifted one trembling hand.

And pointed.

Caleb followed her finger.

Meredith did too.

Every bit of color disappeared from Meredith’s face.

June whispered:

“Watch it.”

Nobody moved.

“Watch the damn camera.”

Caleb looked from June to Meredith.

Meredith backed toward the door.

“You don’t need to do that.”

Caleb turned.

“What?”

“It’s obvious what happened.”

June pushed herself upright against the broken crib.

“No.”

Her eyes stayed on Caleb.

“It’s obvious what you believed happened.”

That sentence landed harder than any scream could have.

Caleb stared at his wife.

June touched her swelling cheek.

“Now find out what actually happened.”

Meredith suddenly reached for the nursery door.

June saw her.

“Don’t let her leave.”

Caleb’s expression changed.

Meredith stopped.

“Caleb…”

His eyes lifted toward the camera again.

The red status light was still blinking.

Recording.

And for the first time since entering the room, Caleb looked afraid of what he was about to see.

👉 Caleb had hit his wife because he believed Meredith—but the camera had recorded the thirty seconds Meredith desperately needed erased.
