PART 8

Victor Lang.
Chief compliance officer.
He was never awake at midnight unless money or prison was involved.
Tonight, it looked like both.
“Ms. Caldwell,” he said, voice tight, “step into the conference room.”
Denise pointed at me.
“She resigned. She has no authority here.”
Victor looked at the directive in my hand.
“Pending legal review, Nurse Martinez remains assigned to Petty Officer Kim’s care.”
Denise’s mouth fell open.
“That is absurd.”
Chief Hayes stepped forward.
“Marcus trusted her. So do we.”
Denise looked around for allies.
She found none.
Not Patricia.
Not the residents.
Not the janitor.
Not the SEALs.
Not even the confused old man, who muttered from his doorway, “I knew she was mean.”
Victor said, “Denise. Now.”
Her voice cracked.
“I built this unit.”
Patricia’s face hardened.
“No. We held it together while you counted minutes.”
Denise was escorted down the hall in her designer heels, past the nurses she had humiliated, past the rooms where patients slept, past Room 314, where Marcus Kim was still fighting for every breath.
As she passed me, she whispered, “You think caring makes you special?”
I looked at her.
“No. I think not caring made you dangerous.”
She had no answer.
By 2:00 a.m., Dr. Wong had repeated scans.
By 3:15, neurology adjusted Marcus’s treatment plan.
By 4:00, hospital legal sealed the records.
By 5:20, St. Catherine’s placed Denise Caldwell on administrative leave pending investigation.

By sunrise, my resignation letter sat unsigned on Victor Lang’s desk.
And Marcus Kim was still alive.
