Chapter 5

Dr. Cooper stood beside Chloe’s bed, still staring at the matching bruises.

Faye noticed his hands.

They were steady.

But his eyes were not.

He looked again at the patient bracelets.

Faye Cooper.

Chloe Cooper.

Same birth date.

Same last name as his.

The nurse beside him whispered, “Doctor?”

Dr. Cooper did not answer right away.

He looked at Faye.

This time, he did not look at her like a stranger.

He looked at her like a man trying not to break.

Edric saw it too.

His panic returned fast.

“You can’t treat them,” he snapped. “This is a conflict. Their mother and I decide what happens.”

Dr. Cooper turned to him.

“No, you don’t.”

Edric struggled against the officers.

“I’m their stepfather.”

“They’re adults,” Dr. Cooper said. “And they are patients with visible injuries and statements of abuse.”

Their mother let out a small sob.

Faye looked at her.

For years, she had wanted her mother to speak.

To defend them.

To choose them.

Now her mother stood three feet away, shaking, with the truth burning the room down around her.

Still silent.

Faye’s heart hardened in a way that hurt.

Dr. Cooper stepped fully in front of the beds.

“Call 911. Right now.”

A nurse blinked.

“Doctor, police are already—”

“Call again,” he said, colder now. “Request detectives. Child and family crimes. Hospital social work. And a protective hold for both patients.”

Edric shouted, “This is insane!”

Then Chloe moved.

It was small.

Just a twitch of her fingers.

Faye turned her head so fast pain shot through her ribs.

“Chloe?”

Chloe’s eyes opened halfway.

Clouded.

Heavy.

But awake.

She looked past the doctor.

Straight at Edric.

Her voice was barely air.

“He will know everything.”

Edric’s face collapsed.

Not with grief.

With fear.

Dr. Cooper turned slightly toward Chloe.

And Chloe looked at him.

For the first time since she was a little girl, her father was standing close enough to hear her.

Dr. Cooper’s face changed completely.

The doctor was still there.

But so was the father.

“Chloe,” he whispered.

Faye’s eyes filled.

Chloe tried to smile, but it came out as pain.

May you like

“Hi, Dad.”

👉 But before Edric could be dragged out, he forced their mother to choose between fear and the truth.
