PART 6

For weeks, Nancy had ruled that hospital like kindness was weakness.

She mocked new nurses until they shook.

She assigned impossible shifts to anyone who questioned her.

She called it discipline.

But everyone knew the truth.

Nancy didn’t lead.

She cornered people.

And tonight, she had cornered the wrong woman in front of the wrong witnesses.

The hospital administrator looked shaken.

“Ms. Whitcomb, you’re relieved from charge duties pending review.”

Nancy’s mouth fell open.

“You can’t be serious.”

General Hale’s voice cut in.

“A man almost died while you argued status.”

No one defended her.

That was the moment she finally understood.

Power built on fear has no friends when the floor cracks.

Two hours later, Eli came out of surgery alive.

Barely.

But alive.

I stood outside recovery with a clean scrub top, my hair damp from washing blood out of it, hands trembling now that no one needed them steady.

General Hale stood beside me.

“You were supposed to stay hidden,” he said.

“I did.”

“Until tonight.”

I looked through the glass at Eli’s unconscious face.

“He found me.”

The General’s expression darkened.

“Not by accident.”

My blood went cold.

He handed me a sealed phone.

“There’s a reason Ward’s team came under attack. The leak from Raven was never fully closed.”

I stared at him.

Three years of silence.

Three years of hiding.

Three years of letting people think I was nothing.

And the nightmare had followed me into a hospital hallway.

“Who?” I asked.

“We don’t know yet,” Hale said. “But Ward was carrying evidence.”

I looked back at Eli.

The wounded soldier on the stretcher.

The man who whispered my old call sign with blood in his mouth.

Nancy had thought the drama was about her authority.

She had no idea the ER doors had opened into a war that never ended.
