Chapter 2

The girl swallowed.
Her broken arm throbbed.
Her ribs hurt when she breathed.
Every part of her body was begging her to stop.
To survive the way she always had.
By staying quiet.
By saying the words they taught her.
I slipped.
I fell.
It was an accident.
But she thought of last night.
The bathroom door locked.
Her old phone hidden under a towel.
The red recording light glowing on the cracked screen.
Her own voice whispering, “Please don’t.”
Then her stepfather’s voice.
Then her mother’s.
The truth was in her hand.
And for the first time, she had brought it somewhere they could not bury it.
The girl slowly pulled the edge of the blanket away from her shoulder.
A nurse covered her mouth.
Old bruises.
New bruises.
Finger marks.
Places no bathtub could explain.
Then the girl reached into the fold of the blanket and pulled out an old phone with a cracked screen.
She clutched it like it was the only thing keeping her alive.
Her mother went pale.
The girl held it toward Dr. Reed.
“Check my phone,” she whispered. “I recorded everything.”
Her mother lunged forward.
“No, she didn’t.”
Dr. Reed moved faster.
He stepped between them and placed one protective hand out, blocking the mother from reaching the girl.
Then he turned his body so the girl was behind him.
“Step away from her,” he said.
Her stepfather straightened.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.”
Dr. Reed’s voice went cold.
“I know exactly what I’m doing.”
He looked at the nearest nurse.
“Call security. Lock down this hallway. And tell dispatch we need officers here now.”
The nurse was already moving.
At the end of the hall, two hospital security guards started running toward them.
Dr. Reed looked directly at the stepfather and mother.
“I’ve already called 911.”
The stepfather froze.
The mother opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Behind Dr. Reed, the girl pressed the cracked phone to her chest and finally broke down.
Not because she had lost.
May you like
Because, for once, someone had heard her.
👉 Her mother tried to bury the truth again — but Dr. Reed had already turned the hospital hallway into a crime scene.
