Rebecca did not make promises.
She gave Grace a list.

Bank statements.
Medical records.
Photos of bruises.
Texts.
Threats.
Anything that proved Daniel was not just leaving a marriage.
He was trying to control the wreckage.
Grace started collecting everything.
Quietly.
Carefully.
Because Daniel had built a story.
Grace was emotional.
Grace was overwhelmed.
Grace was unstable from pregnancy hormones.
Grace did not understand money.
Grace would be better off if Daniel “managed things.”
Then came the settlement agreement.
It arrived three weeks before court.
Grace read it twice at the kitchen table while Lily colored beside her.
Daniel wanted the house.

Grace would vacate the marital residence within seventy-two hours of signing.

When she refused, Daniel smiled.

Grace did.
He made sure she did.
He canceled her credit card.

Grace heard him through the laundry room door one night.

Vanessa laughed softly.
“She always breaks.”
“Good,” Daniel said. “I need her scared enough to sign before the judge starts asking questions.”
Grace stopped breathing.
Then Vanessa said, “What about Lily?”
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“Lily loves that stupid bear. She can hold it in court if it keeps her quiet.”
Grace’s knees almost gave out.
The bear had been Lily’s since she was two.
It was soft, ragged, and missing one plastic eye.
