Chapter 4: Teddy Heard Everything
The recorder was not a spy toy.
It had once been part of a school project.
Lily’s teacher had used it to let children record bedtime messages for deployed parents and traveling relatives.
Months earlier, Lily had pressed the button by accident and recorded Daniel yelling at Grace.
Grace found it later.
She nearly deleted it.
Then Rebecca told her, “Do not destroy anything.”
So Grace kept it.
Lily found out by accident.
“Is Teddy telling the truth?” she asked.
Grace knelt in front of her.
“Teddy recorded something that happened.”
“Can Teddy help?”
Grace’s heart broke.
“No, sweetheart. Grown-ups are handling this.”
But Lily had heard more than Grace realized.
The night before court, Daniel came into Lily’s room while Grace was in the shower.
Grace heard only the last part.
“You remember what I said,” Daniel told Lily. “If Mommy signs, everybody stops fighting.”
Lily’s voice was small.
“But where will Mommy go?”
“That’s not your problem.”
“Will I go with her?”
Daniel paused.
Then he said, “Only if she behaves.”
Grace stood outside the door, her wet hair dripping onto her shirt.
She wanted to burst in.
But she waited.
Because Lily spoke again.
“Did you tell Miss Vanessa you wanted Mommy to lose everything?”
Daniel snapped, “You don’t repeat adult conversations.”
“I heard you.”
“Then forget it.”
That night, Lily slept with the bear in her arms.
Grace did not know she had pressed record.
Now the bear sat on the judge’s bench.
And Daniel could no longer control what it had heard.
The judge looked at Rebecca.
“Counsel, can this device be played?”
Rebecca kept her voice steady.
“Your Honor, we are prepared to authenticate it for emergency purposes. Given what just occurred in this courtroom and the child’s statement, we request the court suspend all settlement proceedings and allow review.”
Daniel’s attorney stood quickly.
“We object to any unauthorized recording being considered.”
The judge’s face hardened.
“Your client just grabbed an eight-month-pregnant woman in my courtroom. Sit down.”
The attorney sat.
Daniel glared at Grace.
“This is what you taught her?”
Grace looked at Lily.
Her daughter was shaking.
That snapped something inside Grace.
She stepped between Daniel and the child.

“No,” Grace said. “This is what you made her hear.”
