Officially, Commander Reed had been injured during a training accident.

Officially, Reed resigned quietly after “conduct concerns.”
That was the version whispered in club rooms and officer dinners.
That was the version Vanessa repeated until people stopped questioning it.
That was the version Reed’s father believed because the truth would have required him to accept something worse.
That his daughter had not fallen.
She had been buried.
The real mission began with a distress call just before dawn.
Reed’s ship received coordinates from a support vessel carrying sensitive equipment and civilian contractors.
There had been an explosion in the engine compartment.
Then fire.
Then secondary failures.
When Reed boarded with the rescue team, smoke had already turned the corridors black.
Sailors were trapped below.
A young communications officer was pinned under a collapsed beam.
The fire suppression system had failed.
Doors that should have sealed automatically stayed open.
Everything about the damage pattern was wrong.
Reed knew it within minutes.
