Chapter 7: The Story She Could Not Steal

Chapter 7: The Story She Could Not Steal
Vanessa tried to move away through the crowd.
The admiral saw it.
“Ms. Reed.”
She froze.
“Security will escort you off the property until local authorities arrive.”
Her eyes widened.
“Authorities? For what?”
The admiral’s voice turned cold again.
“Assault. Harassment. And depending on the recording your guests have already made, possibly public exposure and defamation.”
Vanessa looked around.
Phones were out.
Not for gossip anymore.
For evidence.
Her father’s security staff stepped forward.
For once, Vanessa looked small.
Not innocent.
Small.
She turned to her father.
“Dad, say something.”
He looked at Reed.
Then at the jacket around her shoulders.
Then at the scars still visible near her neck.
His face hardened.
“Leave.”
Vanessa’s mouth fell open.
“You’re choosing her?”
He looked ashamed when he answered.
“I should have chosen her years ago.”
Security led Vanessa away across the sand.
This time, no one followed her performance.
No one protected her tears.
No one let her control the story.
The fundraiser ended immediately.
Guests left in silence.
Officers approached Reed one at a time, not with questions, but with respect.
Some apologized.
Some simply nodded.
One older captain stopped in front of her and said, “Commander, I served with a man you saved. He named his daughter after you.”
Reed looked down.
Her eyes filled, but she held herself steady.
“Is he well?”
“He is.”
That was enough to make her turn toward the ocean.
For a moment, she could not breathe.
The admiral waited until most people had gone.
Then he stood beside Reed near the waterline.
“The hearing is in Washington in three days,” he said. “You do not have to do this today.”
Reed watched the waves break against the shore.
“I’ve been doing it every day for five years.”
He nodded.
“There will be people who try to discredit you.”
“They already did.”
“This time, they won’t be the only ones with records.”
Reed looked at the folder.
Documents.
Photos.
Witness statements.
