Chapter 6

Mark’s wife made a sound like the air had been punched out of her.
Mark stood up halfway.
Then sat back down.
“No,” he said weakly.
Grant placed the DNA page on top of the folder.
“Yes.”
Natalie turned toward Mark with panic in her eyes.
“Say something.”
Mark looked at her like she was a fire he had started and now wanted someone else to put out.
“I told you not to come here,” he said.
That was all his wife needed to hear.
She stood slowly.
“Mark.”
He turned to her.
His whole body seemed to shrink.
“It was a mistake,” he whispered.
Eric stared at his brother.
“My wife?” he said, voice breaking. “My sister-in-law? You let Natalie accuse me in front of everyone?”
Mark looked down.
Eric stepped toward him.
But his wife caught his hand.
Not to protect Mark.
To protect Eric from becoming the kind of man anger wanted him to be.
“Don’t,” she said.
Eric stopped.
His eyes were full of tears now.
Not because he had been embarrassed.
Because he understood what his wife had carried alone.
The suspicion.
The evidence.
The restraint.
The choice to wait for truth instead of revenge.
Natalie suddenly lunged for the folder.
Grant moved it out of reach.
“Do not touch legal evidence,” he said.
Natalie’s voice cracked.
“You ruined my life.”
Her sister stared at her.
“No, Natalie. I just stopped letting you use mine.”
That was when their mother pushed through the crowd.
She looked devastated.
But even then, her first instinct was Natalie.
“Sweetheart,” she said, reaching for her.
Natalie collapsed into her arms.
“She set me up,” Natalie sobbed. “She always hated me.”
The older sister let out a small, broken laugh.
Everyone heard the exhaustion in it.
“I hated you?” she asked. “I gave you my guest room. I paid your car insurance when you lost your job. I held your hand at your first ultrasound. And tonight you stood on a chair and told the world my husband got you pregnant.”
Their mother looked down.
Because she knew it was true.
The father walked forward next.
His eyes were wet.
For once, he did not tell the older daughter to be understanding.
He did not say Natalie was emotional.
He did not ask her to forgive for the sake of family.
He simply looked at her and said, “I’m sorry we made you carry so much.”
That almost broke her.
Almost.
But she had already broken in private too many times.
May you like
Tonight, she stayed standing.
👉 Her family finally saw what Natalie had done — but the damage had already reached innocent people at the front table.
