Chapter 7

Mark’s wife removed her wedding ring and set it on the table in front of him.
Their daughter began crying.
That sound changed everything.
The baby Natalie carried was innocent.
Mark’s daughter was innocent.
Eric’s wife looked at Natalie and felt no victory.
Only grief.
This was what lies did.
They did not just burn the target.
They burned everyone standing close.
Eric finally turned to the guests.
His voice shook.
“I need to say something.”
His wife looked at him, unsure.
Eric stepped beside her.
Not in front of her.
Beside her.
“For years,” he said, “my wife and I have carried a private pain. We did not owe anyone details. We did not owe anyone explanations. And tonight, that pain was used against her in the ugliest way possible.”
The crowd stayed silent.
Eric took his wife’s hand.
“I have made mistakes. I should have told her immediately when Natalie crossed boundaries. I should have protected our peace sooner. But I did not betray my marriage. And I will spend the rest of my life making sure my wife never has to stand alone in a room like this again.”
His wife’s eyes filled.
This time, she let one tear fall.
Natalie looked at them holding hands.
And the last of her confidence disappeared.
Because that was what she had never understood.
She thought stealing attention was the same as winning love.
It was not.
Grant gathered the documents and handed copies to Eric’s wife, Mark’s wife, and the family attorney, who happened to be among the guests.
By morning, the story would spread.
But it would not be the story Natalie had planned.
Mark’s wife filed for separation within the week.
Mark lost his partnership at the firm after company records revealed he had used work trips to hide the affair.
Natalie moved out of state to stay with a cousin after her parents refused to let her turn herself into the victim again.
They did not abandon her.
But for the first time in her life, they stopped rescuing her from the consequences of her choices.
When the baby was born months later, paternity was confirmed again.
Mark was ordered to provide support.
