Chapter 3

PART 3:
Mara went back through every document her mother had left in storage.
Boxes of tax files.
Old letters.
Trust amendments.
Partnership agreements.
Her mother had been careful.
More careful than anyone realized.
The Ashborne Grand had never fully belonged to Mara’s father.
He managed it.
He represented it.
He lived from it.
But the controlling ownership had been placed into a family trust created by Mara’s mother before her illness worsened.
The terms were clear.
Mara’s father could operate the hotel until Mara turned twenty-five.
After that, controlling interest would transfer to Mara.
If he attempted to sell, mortgage, or transfer the hotel without trust approval, his management authority could be revoked immediately.
Mara turned twenty-five six weeks before the gala.
Her father did not mention it.
Celeste did not mention it.
Instead, invitations went out for a “Legacy Gala.”
There were rumors of a major announcement.
A rebrand.
A luxury partnership.
Possibly a sale.
Mara’s name was not on the guest list.
That was when she called Elliot.
Elliot had been her mother’s attorney for almost twenty years.
He sounded older now, but when Mara told him what she had found, his voice became sharp.
“Do not sign anything,” he said.
“I wasn’t invited to sign anything.”
A pause.
Then Elliot said, “Then they’re planning to do something worse.”
Over the next two weeks, Mara learned the truth piece by piece.
Celeste had pushed Mara’s father to sell a majority stake to a private development group.
The group planned to strip the Ashborne name.
Remodel the hotel.
And turn the upper floors into luxury residences.
Mara’s father would receive a payout.
Celeste would receive a consulting contract.
The staff would receive termination notices after the transition.
The scholarship foundation would disappear.
Mara’s mother’s legacy would become a logo in an old newspaper clipping.
Elliot filed an emergency trust review.
He notified the board.
He prepared the transfer documents.
But he told Mara one thing clearly.
“Let them reveal their intent publicly. Then we will have witnesses.”
So Mara came to the gala.
Not in diamonds.
Not with cameras.
Just with a folder.
And hope that maybe, just maybe, her father would see her and choose his daughter before it was too late.

Instead, Celeste called security.
👉 Mara came hoping her father would choose her — but Celeste’s public cruelty gave Elliot exactly the witnesses he needed…
