Chapter 4

PART 4:

Now, under the brass clock, Mara heard the revolving doors turn behind her.

Elliot walked into the lobby in a dark suit, carrying a sealed legal packet with a county stamp across the front.

He did not rush.

He did not raise his voice.

He walked straight past the guards and stopped in front of Celeste and Mara’s father.

Celeste’s smile disappeared.

“What is this?” she asked.

Elliot looked at her as if she were a line item in a bad contract.

“A correction.”

Mara’s father turned pale.

“Elliot?”

“Mr. Ashborne,” Elliot said. “You were served notice last week. You chose not to respond.”

Celeste stepped forward.

“This is not the time.”

“No,” Elliot said. “This is exactly the time. You made it public.”

Guests leaned closer.

A waiter froze with a tray of champagne in his hands.

Elliot opened the packet.

“The hotel is no longer yours.”

The lobby went completely still.

Celeste blinked.

“What did you just say?”

Elliot handed Mara’s father the first page.

“Effective immediately, under the terms of the Eleanor Ashborne Family Trust, management authority has been revoked due to unauthorized sale negotiations, misuse of restricted foundation funds, and failure to transfer controlling ownership upon Mara Ashborne’s twenty-fifth birthday.”

Mara’s father stared at the paper.

His hand trembled.

Celeste snatched it from him.

“This is ridiculous,” she said. “He owns this hotel.”

“No,” Elliot said. “He operated it on behalf of the trust.”

Celeste looked around, realizing too late that the people watching were not just relatives and friends.

Board members were in the room.

Investors were in the room.

Longtime staff were in the room.

People who knew enough to understand what Elliot was saying.

Mara’s father swallowed hard.

“Mara,” he said quietly.

It was the first time all night he had spoken her name.

She turned then.

Slowly.

The security guards were still beside her.

But neither of them touched her.

They looked ashamed now.

Mara walked back across the lobby.

Every step echoed against the marble floor.

Celeste lifted a hand.

“Don’t come near me.”

Mara stopped in front of her.

“I was leaving,” Mara said. “You told me to.”

Celeste’s face flushed.

“You planned this.”

Mara looked at her father.

“No. I gave him every chance not to let it happen.”

Her father opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Elliot continued.

“The board has already recognized Mara Ashborne as controlling trustee. The pending sale is void. Any contracts signed without her approval are invalid.”

A murmur moved through the crowd.

Celeste’s eyes widened.

“The sale is void?”

“Yes,” Elliot said.

Her voice cracked.

“You can’t do that.”

Mara finally looked at Celeste directly.

May you like

“You tried to sell my mother’s hotel while calling it a family gala.”

👉 The sale Celeste built her future on was dead — but Mara still had one final message from her mother to read aloud…
