Chapter 5

For a moment, Ethan did not understand.
Or maybe he did.
Maybe his mind simply refused to let the truth enter in front of two hundred witnesses.
The bride stumbled backward.
Her knees buckled beneath the weight of what she had just heard.
Two bridesmaids caught her before she hit the floor.
Ethan shook his head.
“No. No, this is a misunderstanding.”
The captain opened the folder.
“You are under arrest for reckless endangerment, child endangerment, making a false police report, obstruction, and domestic assault pending further review.”
Ethan’s voice rose.
“She’s lying!”
The captain held up the phone.
“Then you may want to explain your own voice.”
He tapped the screen.
The recording filled the wedding hall.
Ethan’s voice came through first.
Cold.
Clear.
“You think anyone will believe you? You just gave birth. You’re exhausted. You’ve been acting unstable for weeks.”
Grace closed her eyes.
The hall stayed silent.
Then her own voice came through, weak but steady.
“Give me my phone.”
The baby cried in the background.
Then Ethan again.
“You need to leave.”
Grace’s voice broke.
“Ethan, there’s a blizzard.”
Then his laugh.
Cruel.
Unmistakable.
“You always said you were strong.”
Someone in the audience sobbed.
The bride covered her mouth with both hands.
The captain stopped the recording.
“That was captured from the hospital-issued infant monitoring device,” he said. “It matched the time your wife and newborn were found outside in life-threatening conditions.”
Ethan looked around desperately.
At the guests.
At the bride.
At the officers.
No one stepped forward for him.
The captain continued.
“Hospital security also has footage of you leaving the maternity ward with Grace and the child. Phone records confirm multiple deleted calls. The rental house lock log shows you engaged the deadbolt two minutes after Grace was forced outside.”
Ethan’s face collapsed.
Not with remorse.
With panic.
“That device was illegal,” he said.
The captain’s eyes hardened.
“No. Leaving a newborn in a snowstorm was.”
The words rolled through the room like thunder.
Grace looked at Ethan for a long time.
This was the man she had once loved.
The man who held her hand at city hall.
The man who cried when the first pregnancy test turned positive.

Or maybe she had loved a version of him that only existed when life was easy.
👉 But Ethan’s wedding was never about love — it was the alibi he built to bury Grace.
