Chapter 10 - THE MAN BESIDE ME

I did not believe her.
Not at first.
Then the drive opened.
Inside were scanned bank records, emails, legal documents, and audio files.
One folder was labeled DC.
Daniel Carter.
My husband sat beside me in Julia’s office while a forensic analyst projected the files onto the wall.
The first document was a consulting agreement.
Daniel’s signature appeared at the bottom.
The agreement connected him to one of the trust’s rental companies.
Dated five years earlier.
Before Emma was born.
Before we married.
I turned to him.
“What is this?”
His face had gone pale.
“I don’t know.”
The analyst opened an email.
FROM: [email protected]
SUBJECT: BENEFICIARY EXPOSURE
The message outlined ways to delay a trust transfer.
It included my full name.
My birth date.
My old address.
Daniel stood.
“That isn’t my email.”
Julia looked at him.
“You worked at Hartwell Finance.”
“Yes.”
“And this address format?”
“It was standard.”
“Could someone access your account?”
“I left that company six years ago.”
The analyst checked the metadata.
“The messages were sent from Hartwell’s internal network.”
My stomach turned.
I remembered how Daniel and I met.
At a charity fundraiser.
My mother had introduced us.
I had always thought it was coincidence.
“Did my mother hire you?” I asked.
“No.”
“Did she know you before we met?”
Daniel looked at the floor.
Too long.
“Daniel.”
He closed his eyes.
“She contacted me once.”
The room went silent.
“When?”
“Two months before we met.”
My hands went cold.
“What did she want?”
“She asked me to review some property documents.”
“And you did?”
“Yes.”
“Did they have my name?”
“I don’t remember.”
“That means yes.”
“I swear I didn’t understand.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because after we started dating, I realized she was controlling you. I cut contact.”
“But you never told me.”
“I was ashamed.”
I stepped backward.
Every safe memory in my marriage shifted.
Our first date.
Our wedding.
Emma’s birth.
Had my mother placed him beside me?
Had he stayed because he loved me?
Or because he had a role?
The analyst opened another file.
An audio recording.
Daniel’s voice filled the room.
“If Rachel never learns about the trust, the transfer can be delayed indefinitely.”
I stared at him.
He looked shattered.
“That is my voice.”
Daniel sat down slowly.
“But I don’t remember saying it.”
Julia stopped the recording.
“When was this made?”
The metadata showed six years earlier.
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
“Hartwell assigned me to review an estate dispute. I gave technical advice. Names were redacted.”
“My name wasn’t redacted in the email.”
“I never saw that email.”
I wanted to believe him.
That was the worst part.
I still wanted to.
Aaron arrived with a warrant.
He did not look at Daniel.
“We need to seize your devices.”
Daniel nodded.
“Do it.”
I took Emma to a hotel that night.
Daniel did not come with us.
Julia advised temporary separation until police cleared him.
Emma cried for her father.
I cried in the bathroom where she could not hear me.
At two in the morning, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
My mother’s voice whispered through the line.
“Now you know.”
I sat up.
“Where are you?”
“You trusted the man I chose for you.”
My grip tightened.
“You set us up?”
“I gave him an opportunity.”
“Did he know?”
A pause.
Then she laughed softly.
“Ask him why he married you three days after discovering the trust value.”
The call ended.
A second later, someone knocked on the hotel door.
Three slow knocks.
Then Emma’s voice came from the bedroom.
“Mommy?”
I moved toward the door.
A white envelope slid underneath.
Inside was our marriage license.

On the back, written in Daniel’s handwriting, were four words.
I WAS PAID TO STAY.
