Chapter 1 - The Moment Grant Walked In

The vase shattered against the hardwood.

Tessa Monroe fell beside the sofa, one arm wrapped around twelve-month-old Noah Mercer.

The baby screamed against her chest.

Vivienne Cross stood over them, breathing hard.

Then the front door opened.

Grant Mercer stepped inside.

His briefcase slipped from his hand.

“What the hell happened?”

Vivienne froze.

Tessa didn’t answer.

She was too busy checking Noah.

Grant crossed the living room in three strides.

“Noah.”

The baby reached toward him, sobbing.

Grant dropped to his knees.

Then he saw Tessa’s trembling hand.

The pieces of the broken vase.

Vivienne’s expression.

Something changed in his face.

He stood.

Slowly.

“Vivienne.”

She immediately pointed at Tessa.

“She attacked me.”

Grant looked at Tessa.

“Is that true?”

Tessa raised her eyes.

“She went after Noah.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

Vivienne laughed sharply.

“That’s ridiculous.”

Tessa pointed toward the ceiling.

“Check the camera.”

Silence.

Vivienne’s face changed.

Grant followed Tessa’s gaze.

The security camera above the foyer had captured the entire room.

Vivienne stepped forward.

“Grant, listen to me.”

He moved between her and Noah.

“No.”

Vivienne stopped.

Grant’s voice dropped.

“You’re going to stand exactly where you are until I know what happened.”

Vivienne looked toward the security camera.

For the first time, fear replaced arrogance.

Grant called for medical help.

Then building security.

As they waited, Tessa whispered:

“She’s done this before.”

Grant turned.

“What?”

Vivienne snapped:

“She’s lying.”

Tessa looked directly at Grant.

“No.”

Her voice shook.

“She just never thought Noah would be able to tell you.”

Grant stared at her.

Noah was twelve months old.

He couldn’t explain anything.

But Tessa could.

And apparently—

May you like

so could the camera.

👉 Grant thought he had walked in on one violent argument, but the footage was about to show him that Noah had been afraid of Vivienne long before that afternoon.
