Chapter 1 - The Girl Inside the Ice

“LILY!”

Ethan Carter slammed both ballroom doors open so hard they struck the walls.

The orchestra stopped.

A hundred guests turned.

And Ethan forgot how to breathe.

At the center of the ballroom stood a towering block of transparent ice beneath the crystal chandeliers.

Inside it was his twenty-month-old daughter.

Lily.

Her pale blue party dress was soaked against her tiny body.

Her lips trembled.

Her eyes were open.

Terrified.

Vivian Hale stood beside the ice in a silver evening gown, one hand resting proudly against the frozen surface.

She smiled.

“Exquisite, isn’t it?”

For one second, Ethan could not understand what he was seeing.

Then Lily moved.

Barely.

Her little fingers twitched.

“Daddy…”

Ethan lunged forward.

“What the hell did you do?”

Vivian stepped between him and the display.

“Don’t ruin the presentation.”

Ethan shoved past her.

The guests began backing away.

Someone screamed.

Ethan grabbed the emergency torch from the catering ice-sculpture station nearby.

“Ethan!” Vivian shouted.

He ignored her.

Heat blasted across the outer shell.

Cracks raced through the ice.

“Daddy!”

“I’m getting you out!”

The ice split.

Water exploded across the polished floor.

Ethan reached into the collapsing shell and pulled Lily against his chest.

She was freezing.

Shivering.

Crying so hard she could barely breathe.

Ethan ripped off his tuxedo jacket and wrapped it around her.

“I’ve got you.”

Vivian approached.

“You’re being dramatic.”

Ethan slowly turned.

“Dramatic?”

“She was never in danger.”

“You put my daughter inside ice.”

“It was controlled.”

Lily clung tighter to Ethan.

Then she whispered something.

“She does this every time you go away.”

Ethan stopped.

Every time.

Not tonight.

Not once.

Every time.

His eyes moved to Vivian.

Her expression changed for the first time.

Ethan stepped toward her.

“Stay away from my daughter.”

Vivian rolled her eyes.

“You don’t even understand—”

Ethan shoved her away from Lily.

Vivian stumbled and fell hard onto the wet ballroom floor.

Guests gasped.

Ethan didn’t care.

Lily buried her face against his neck.

Then her tiny arm came out.

She pointed at Vivian.

Her whole body trembled.

“She did something worse to Mommy.”

The ballroom went silent.

Ethan’s heart stopped.

Lily’s mother, Claire, had been missing for eleven months.

Vivian had told Ethan Claire abandoned them.

A handwritten note had been found in Claire’s bedroom.

Her car was discovered at the airport.

Security footage showed a woman in Claire’s coat entering the terminal.

And Vivian had been the person who stayed beside Ethan while his family collapsed.

Ethan stared at his daughter.

“What did she do to Mommy?”

Vivian pushed herself up.

“She’s confused.”

Lily’s eyes filled with terror.

“No.”

Vivian’s face hardened.

“She’s a baby, Ethan.”

But Lily knew one more word.

One word she had repeated during nightmares for months.

“Basement.”

Ethan slowly looked at Vivian.

The confidence drained from her face.

Because the Carter mansion had a basement Ethan had not entered since the week Claire disappeared.

Vivian had told him a pipe burst there.

She had ordered the whole lower level sealed for repairs.

And suddenly Ethan realized he had never seen an invoice.

Never met the contractor.

Never even asked for the key.
