Chapter 5

Michael turned on Vanessa.

“Don’t act surprised. You knew how this worked.”

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“I knew you said it was handled. I didn’t know you were stealing from your wife’s family.”

Michael pointed at Mari.

“She made me do it. She kept me under her father’s thumb.”

Mari’s father finally moved closer.

He had been patient.

Measured.

Controlled.

But now his voice sharpened.

“No, Michael. My daughter loved you. She trusted you. She defended you when every number on my desk told me not to.”

Michael had no answer.

Mari’s father continued.

“I stayed quiet because she asked me to. I let the court do its work because she wanted to leave you cleanly. But the second you walked out here and tried to shame her while still reaching into her pocket, you lost the last protection her mercy gave you.”

Michael stared at him.

For the first time, he understood.

Mari had not been alone.

She had been restrained.

There was a difference.

The SUV driver cleared his throat.

“Sir, I need a valid card or I have to cancel the booking.”

Michael spun around.

“Give me a minute.”

The driver shook his head.

“Company policy.”

The booking canceled on the driver’s tablet with a soft beep.

It was a small sound.

Almost ridiculous.

But on that sidewalk, it felt like a final curtain falling.

Vanessa pulled her arm free from Michael.

“You told me the divorce settlement included money.”

“It does,” Michael snapped.

Mari’s attorney glanced at the file.

“His settlement is subject to offsets for verified unauthorized charges.”

Vanessa stared at Michael.

“How much?”

Nobody answered.

Because Michael already knew.

More than he had admitted.

More than he could easily repay.

More than Vanessa was willing to attach herself to.

She looked at the courthouse behind them.

Then at the legal packet on the SUV.

Then at Mari.

For one brief second, embarrassment crossed her face.

Not apology.

Embarrassment.

She removed the bracelet.

Slowly.

Then placed it on the hood beside the documents.

Michael looked horrified.

“What are you doing?”

Vanessa stepped back.

“I’m not going down for your lie.”

Then she walked away.

Michael called after her.

She did not turn around.
