Chapter 6

Mari watched him.

She felt no joy.

That surprised her.

She had imagined this moment for months.

She thought justice would feel like fireworks.

Instead, it felt like finally setting down a heavy box she had carried too long.

Michael looked at her one last time.

His voice was quieter now.

“Mari, come on. We can fix this.”

She almost laughed.

Fix this.

Not apologize.

Not confess.

Not make it right.

Fix this.

Meaning hide it.

Smooth it over.

Protect him again.

She shook her head.

“No.”

One word.

Seven years late.

But strong enough.

Her father placed a hand on her back.

This time, not to steady her.

To guide her forward.

They walked past Michael, down the sidewalk, toward the waiting car where her mother sat with tears in her eyes and a thermos of coffee like Mari was still sixteen after a hard day at school.

Behind them, Michael picked up the legal packet with shaking hands.

The courthouse doors closed.

The city kept moving.

And Mari did too.

The audit took four months.

It found more than even Mari had expected.

False vendor invoices.

Duplicate reimbursements.

Charges disguised under client codes.

A weekend in Miami billed as a “regional strategy meeting.”

A necklace for Vanessa categorized as “executive gifting.”

Michael tried to claim confusion.

The documents disagreed.

He tried to blame Vanessa.

Her messages disagreed.

He tried to say Mari had approved everything.

Her records disagreed.

In the end, he was ordered to repay a large portion of the stolen funds.

The rest became part of a civil settlement that emptied the accounts he had been bragging about.

His professional reputation collapsed.

The clients he had boasted to stopped taking his calls.

The men who had laughed with him at expensive bars did not stand beside him when invoices and receipts became public in court.

Vanessa disappeared first.

Then the SUV.

Then the condo he had rented to impress her.

Michael learned the hard way that a lifestyle built on someone else’s money ends the moment access is denied.

👉 Michael thought Mari would protect him again — but the audit turned every lie into a number he could not escape.
