Chapter 3 - The Charge I Made Disappear

Daniel stared at me across the red-lit ballroom.
“What charge?”
Victoria stood beside him now, one hand gripping his arm.
“Don’t listen to this.”
He pulled away.
“What charge, Rachel?”
General Hayes ordered the speakers disconnected, but the distorted voice had already done what it intended.
It had turned every eye toward me.
I had spent most of my career controlling information.
Tonight, information was controlling the room.
I asked Hayes for a private security chamber.
He refused.
“Whatever Pike knows, he’s using secrecy against us. We keep the key witnesses together.”
Key witnesses.
Daniel.
Victoria.
Caroline.
Possibly General Hayes himself.
I looked at Daniel.
“Three years ago, your badge was used to enter a restricted communications center at Fort Belvoir.”
His face tightened.
“I was stationed in Germany.”
“You were on temporary leave in Virginia.”
“For our anniversary.”
“I remember.”
We had spent one night at a hotel outside Washington before Daniel left for another training rotation. Victoria sent him a wrapped gift and told him to deliver it to Brigadier General Robert Keene as a professional courtesy.
Daniel handed it to Keene’s aide.
Twenty minutes later, the package transmitted location data from inside a classified conference.
Daniel shook his head.
“That was a bottle of bourbon.”
“The bottle contained a beacon.”
“I didn’t know.”
“I believed you.”
“Then why was I assessed as compromised?”
“Because intent and vulnerability are different questions.”
The answer angered him.
“You investigated me while we were married.”
“I investigated the breach.”
“You never told me.”
“I couldn’t.”
“You could have trusted me.”
The words hit an old wound.
“You were the one carrying the device.”
“Because my mother asked me.”
“And when I questioned you about Victoria’s connections, you accused me of hating your family.”
He looked toward her.
Victoria’s face remained still.
Caroline stepped backward from both of them.
General Hayes spoke.
“Was Keene involved?”
“No,” I said. “He was the target.”
“What happened to the case?”
“I closed the line of inquiry against Daniel after surveillance confirmed he had no knowledge of the beacon.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You saved me?”
“I prevented an unsupported charge.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“It is the only answer you were entitled to.”
His expression hardened in a way I remembered from our marriage.
“You always hid behind duty.”
“And you always demanded access to things that could get people killed.”
Victoria interrupted.
“This has nothing to do with tonight.”
I turned toward her.
“It has everything to do with tonight. The beacon inside that gift was manufactured by a covert logistics cell run by Elias Pike.”
For the first time, she looked frightened.
Daniel saw it.
“You knew him before today.”
“No.”
“Mother.”
“I knew of him.”
“How?”
“He handled private transportation for diplomatic families.”
“Why did you give me his package?”
“It was a favor.”
“To whom?”
She looked toward Caroline.
Again.
Caroline shook her head.
“Stop looking at me.”
Victoria’s voice sharpened.
“Your father arranged the introduction.”
General Hayes went still.
“I did no such thing.”
Victoria faced him.
“Robert Keene said you approved Pike.”
Hayes’ jaw tightened.
“Keene died eighteen months ago.”
“So did Pike, apparently,” I said.
The lead MP approached with a recovered object.
A pearl lay inside an evidence pouch.
Victoria touched her necklace.
One pearl was missing.
The MP placed the pouch beneath a scanner.
A tiny transmitter was embedded inside it.
Victoria stepped back.
“I didn’t know.”
Daniel looked at his mother as though he no longer recognized her.
The device had transmitted continuously since she entered the ballroom.
Not audio.
Biometric data.
Heart rates.
Voice patterns.
Facial recognition samples from every senior officer present.
General Hayes ordered her detained for questioning.
Two MPs moved toward her.
Victoria recoiled.
“This is Rachel’s revenge.”
“No,” I said. “This is evidence.”
The black ID in my hand vibrated.
An incoming classified message appeared.
SOURCE CONFIRMED INSIDE BALLROOM.
SECONDARY TARGET: LT. GENERAL HAYES.
Beside the text was a live image from a camera hidden somewhere above us.
The frame centered on General Hayes’ chest.
