Chapter 5

Claire covered her mouth.
Ethan felt something inside him go colder.
This was bigger than one slap.
One threat.
One ugly night.
He handed the clock to Deputy James Miller, an older officer who had known the Walker family since Ethan was a kid.
“There’s a recording,” Ethan said. “Maybe more than one.”
Danielle straightened immediately.
“That’s private property.”
Deputy Miller looked at her.
“So is an elderly woman’s body.”
Danielle said nothing.
The nurse, Olivia Grant, checked Margaret’s wrist and cheek.
Then her expression changed as she examined the bruising near Margaret’s upper arm.
“These are grip marks,” she said quietly.
Danielle snapped, “She bruises easily.”
Olivia looked at Ethan.
“She does. But these patterns are not from falling.”
Claire started crying.
Ethan didn’t.
He stood beside the bed like a man holding back a storm with his teeth.
Deputy Miller asked Danielle to step into the hall.
She refused at first.
Then he said it again in the voice of a man who was done asking.
As she walked past Ethan, she whispered, “You’re going to ruin our marriage over her?”
Ethan looked at his mother, who was staring at the blanket like she was ashamed to still be alive.
Then he looked back at Danielle.
“No,” he said. “You already did.”
The next hour opened the house like a wound.
The clock camera held weeks of motion-triggered clips.
Danielle yanking the blanket away.
Danielle pushing papers toward Margaret.
Danielle taking Margaret’s phone from the nightstand.
Danielle telling her, “Ethan doesn’t want to hear you cry.”
Danielle saying, “Claire has her own life. Stop pretending anyone is coming.”
Margaret begging for water.
