Chapter 6

Ethan watched only three clips before he had to step outside.

The cold night air hit his face.

He had survived mortar fire.

Convoys.

Ambushes.

The sound of a medic yelling for more gauze.

But the sound of his mother quietly saying, “Please don’t be mad,” on that recording nearly dropped him to his knees.

Claire came out behind him.

“You didn’t know,” she said.

Ethan’s hands curled into fists.

“I should have.”

“How?”

“I called every week.”

“And Danielle controlled the calls.”

“I sent money.”

“She controlled the accounts.”

“I asked if Mom was okay.”

Claire’s voice broke.

“And Danielle lied.”

Ethan looked through the bedroom window.

He could see his mother inside, smaller than he remembered, holding Olivia’s hand.

“I was supposed to protect her.”

Claire stepped beside him.

“You were serving your country.”

He shook his head.

“My mother is my country too.”

That sentence stayed with Claire for the rest of her life.

By midnight, Danielle was escorted out of the house.

Not in handcuffs yet.

That came later.

But with a warning not to return.

She stood on the porch in the porchlight, wrapped in a designer coat Ethan had paid for from deployment money.

Her face was wet.

Her eyes were furious.

“You’re choosing a sick old woman over your wife,” she said.

Ethan stood in the doorway.

“No,” he said. “I’m choosing the truth over a monster.”

Her mouth opened.

No words came.

For once.

The investigation moved fast after that.

Elder abuse.

Coercion.

Attempted financial exploitation.

Isolation.

Fraud.

Danielle had been trying to force Margaret to sign documents transferring the house into a trust Danielle controlled.

She had already forged Margaret’s signature on two bank forms and drained nearly twelve thousand dollars from an account Ethan used for home-care expenses.

But the worst twist came three days later.
