Chapter 10 - The First Piece of Justice

Jonathan found the answer inside Beverly’s prenatal records.

She had not chosen to carry the boy because she wanted motherhood.

She carried him because the trust required the gestational mother to survive the birth before guardian control activated.

Annika had been assigned the girl as a test.

Beverly carried the boy to guarantee one heir remained under her physical control.

But the records revealed something else.

She had received embryo transfer medication under a false identity.

Signed clinic documents with forged credentials.

Crossed state lines during the procedure.

And lied to every attending physician about the genetic origin of the embryo.

Her claim depended on asking the court to enforce a crime.

The hearing resumed that afternoon.

Jonathan stood.

“Beverly Stanford cannot claim parental rights from conduct rooted in kidnapping, reproductive assault, fraud, and identity theft.”

Her attorney argued biology was not the only basis for parenthood.

Jonathan agreed.

“Parenthood may arise through love, consent, care, and lawful intention.”

He looked toward the screen.

“But Beverly demonstrated none of those.”

He played her own recorded words.

I need the baby alive.

One child gives Edwin control.

Two children give me leverage over everyone.

The judge ruled that neither Beverly nor Edwin would receive custody.

The guardianship documents were void because they were obtained through fraud.

My father’s signatures did not authorize theft.

Annika waived any parental claim to the girl but requested the right to send a letter when the child was older.

The judge allowed it.

Then she looked at me.

“Ms. Stanford, biological connection alone does not automatically determine permanent custody.”

“I understand.”

“Are you prepared to care for two premature infants whose conception was forced upon you?”

The question cut deep because it was fair.

I looked through the nursery window.

The girl slept beneath a pink blanket.

The boy moved one hand beside his face.

I had not chosen their creation.

But they existed now.

They were not evidence.

Not heirs.

Not revenge.

They were two innocent people.

“I am not prepared,” I said.

The courtroom went silent.

Edwin smiled faintly from the custody table.

I continued.

“But I am willing to become prepared.”

His smile disappeared.

“I will attend every class, accept every home inspection, work with independent guardians, and follow every recommendation.”

I looked at the judge.

“I will not claim they belong to me because of blood.”

My voice shook.

“I will ask for the chance to show them they belong to themselves.”

The judge granted me temporary physical custody under court supervision.

Permanent custody would be reviewed after six months.

It was not a triumphant ending.

It was better.

It was honest.

Edwin was remanded without bail after new charges were filed.

Beverly faced kidnapping, reproductive assault, fraud, conspiracy, unlawful imprisonment, and attempted trafficking.

Dr. Crane agreed to cooperate.

Annika entered witness protection after revealing three other women whose eggs had been taken.

Robert regained interim control of Stanford Holdings.

Then he transferred voting authority to an independent board with me as chair.

My father resigned from every trust position.

He told me he would accept whatever distance I needed.

I did not forgive him.

Not yet.

But I allowed him to sit outside the nursery.

He watched the children through glass.

No ownership.

No decisions.

Only presence.

That night, I brought the twins to a secure home overlooking the ocean.

Brutus entered first.

He inspected every room, then lay beside the bassinets.

The girl reached toward his fur.

The boy slept through everything.

I sat between them until dawn.

For the first time in three years, no one controlled the door.

No one held the key above me.

No one demanded I crawl.

My phone rang shortly after sunrise.

Edwin.

A recorded jail call.

I almost rejected it.

Then I answered.

His voice came through quietly.

“You think this is over?”

“No.”

“You took my company.”

“It was never yours.”

“You took my children.”

“They were never property.”

He breathed heavily.

“My mother kept copies of every embryo record.”

“Federal agents have the clinic files.”

“Not the private transfers.”

My stomach tightened.

“How many?”

He laughed softly.

“Ask your father why he only told you about twelve eggs.”

The original report showed twelve.

But the surgical extraction record contained a coded attachment.

Jonathan opened it while I stayed on the line.

His face changed.

Twenty-eight eggs had been taken.

Nine embryos were created in the first laboratory.

The others had been sent elsewhere.

“How many children?” I asked.

Edwin’s voice became almost cheerful.

“I don’t know.”

“Where are they?”

“That information is worth something.”

“You have nothing left to trade for.”

“I have the names of the families who bought them.”

I looked toward the twins.

Two children safe.

Potentially many more hidden.

I understood then that destroying Edwin would not be enough.

I had to dismantle everything that had taught him people could be owned.

“You want a deal?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Then stay alive.”

He went silent.

“Because I am going to find every child, every doctor, every buyer, and every account.”

I looked at Brutus sleeping beside the bassinets.

“And you are going to watch me turn your entire family empire into the weapon that destroys you.”

I ended the call.

Across the room, the girl opened her eyes.

I lifted her carefully.

Her brother stirred beside us.

Outside, the storm had passed.

Sunlight spread across the ocean.

For the first time since Edwin forced me to my knees, I understood what my father meant when he told me to call only after everything was lost.

The call had never been meant to save my old life.

It was meant to begin the one I would build after it.
