PART 2: The Woman He Called Broken

PART 2: The Woman He Called Broken
Five years earlier, Mariana loved Ryan with the kind of trust that made her dangerous to herself.
She believed every apology.
Explained away every cold glance.
Forgave every silence after doctor appointments.
When they married, Ryan was still climbing.
He came from money, but not enough money for the life he wanted.
Mariana came from quiet wealth.
Not flashy.
Not loud.
Her father owned aviation companies, private hangars, and luxury charter routes across the country.
But Mariana never acted like an heiress.
She taught art therapy to children at a small community center.
She wore simple dresses.
She remembered birthdays.
She cried during old movies.
Ryan used to say that made her “pure.”
Later, he called it naive.
The problems began when they tried to have a baby.
Month after month.
Test after test.
Hope after hope.
Every negative result broke Mariana a little more.
Ryan was gentle at first.
Then impatient.
Then cruel.
“You’re making this harder than it needs to be,” he said one night after another doctor visit.
Mariana stared at him.
“How am I making it harder?”
“You cry every time. Like I’m not disappointed too.”
She apologized.
That became a habit.
Apologizing for pain he helped create.
The doctors suggested more testing for both of them.
Ryan refused.
“My side of the family has never had issues,” he said.
Mariana did every test alone.
Hormone panels.
Scans.
Procedures.
Needles.
Waiting rooms.
She carried every result home like a school report she was afraid to show.
One specialist finally said, “Your results don’t explain the infertility. We strongly recommend testing your husband.”
Mariana told Ryan carefully that night.
He stared at her like she had insulted his bloodline.
“So now it’s my fault?”
“No. That’s not what I said.”
“That’s exactly what you said.”
He left the house for three days.
When he came back, he brought flowers.
Then he told her not to mention male testing again.
Soon after, the whispers started.
At family dinners, Ryan’s mother patted Mariana’s hand and said, “Some women are born for motherhood. Some are born for other purposes.”
Ryan said nothing.
At charity events, people asked when they planned to have children.
Ryan would smile sadly and squeeze Mariana’s shoulder.
“We’re praying,” he said.
But later, in the car, his voice would turn sharp.
“You see how people look at me?”
Mariana looked out the window.
“They’re looking at both of us.”
“No,” Ryan snapped. “They’re wondering why I married a woman who can’t give me a family.”
That sentence lived inside her for years.
Then came Celeste.
She was a wedding planner Ryan hired for a charity gala.
Young.
Beautiful.
Loud in the way people mistake for confidence.
At first, Mariana tried not to notice how Celeste touched Ryan’s arm.
How Ryan laughed too easily around her.
How he stopped coming home with explanations and started coming home with cologne that was not his.
When Mariana confronted him, Ryan didn’t deny the affair.
He looked relieved.
“I can’t keep wasting my life,” he said.
Mariana felt the room tilt.
“Wasting?”
“I want children.”
Her voice broke.
“So do I.”
Ryan’s eyes hardened.
“But you can’t.”
He filed for divorce three weeks later.
In court, he painted Mariana as emotionally unstable, obsessed with fertility, and unable to accept the truth.
His lawyers were expensive.
His family was loud.
Mariana was exhausted.
She signed what she had to sign just to breathe again.
The day the divorce finalized, Ryan leaned close and whispered, “No man is going to want the woman who couldn’t give her husband a child.”
Mariana went home and collapsed on the bathroom floor.
That same night, her doctor called.
There had been a lab mistake.
One old sample from Ryan’s “basic screening” had finally been retested after an internal audit.
The doctor’s voice was gentle.
“Mrs. Whitmore, you were not the problem.”
Mariana sat up slowly.
“What?”
“We need to talk in person.”
Mariana placed one hand over her mouth.
