Chapter 1 - The Bruises Under The Blanket

Ethan Cole yanked the white hospital blanket down with one hard pull.

The room went still.

Under the cold fluorescent lights, Lily Bell lay motionless in a pale blue hospital gown, her face too still, her lips colorless, her dark hair spread across the pillow like spilled ink.

And her legs—

Her legs were covered in bruises.

Deep purple marks wrapped around her knees, her shins, and the tops of her thighs. Some were fresh. Some were older. Some looked like fingerprints. Others looked like blunt-force strikes.

Ethan stopped breathing.

He had rushed to Saint Catherine’s after getting a call that Lily had “collapsed from stress.”

But stress did not leave bruises like that.

His voice came out raw.

“Who did this to her?”

Behind him, Dr. Margaret Bell stood in her white coat, frozen.

Lily’s mother.

Head of rehabilitation medicine.

Respected.

Polished.

Untouchable.

For a second, she said nothing.

Then she stepped forward, trying to regain the same cold control she wore at galas and board meetings.

“She made me do it.”

Ethan turned so fast the metal bed rail rattled.

“What?”

Margaret lifted her chin, her voice growing sharper now that she thought blame might save her.

“She fought me. She’s been unstable for weeks. She was hysterical. She wouldn’t listen.”

Ethan looked down at Lily again.

Her fingers did not move.

Her eyelashes did not flutter.

The bruises were still right there under the bright white light, impossible to explain away.

His hands started shaking.

He bent down, gripping Lily’s knees with trembling fingers, then lowered his head and pressed one broken kiss against a bruise on her leg like he could somehow apologize for not finding her sooner.

When he looked up, his eyes were no longer full of grief.

They were full of rage.

Margaret saw it one second too late.

Ethan crossed the room in two strides and slapped her so hard her body twisted sideways.

She lost her balance and crashed to the hospital floor beside the bed.

A tray clattered against the wall.

Margaret stared up at him, stunned, one hand on her cheek.

Ethan stood between her and the bed now, his whole body shaking.

“Don’t you dare blame her.”

Margaret tried to crawl backward.

“Ethan, you don’t understand—”

“You broke her.”

His voice cracked on the last word.

Behind him, Lily still lay unconscious, her bruised legs exposed beneath the fluorescent lights, the hospital monitor ticking softly like time itself was listening.

Ethan crouched down in front of Margaret, close enough for her to see he was done being polite.

“Now tell me the truth.”

Margaret’s face changed.

Not to guilt.

To fear.

Because she finally realized the one man she had tried hardest to keep away from Lily was now standing in her hospital room, looking at bruises she could not hide.

And just outside the half-open door, someone had heard everything.

👉 The person standing in the hallway knew exactly why Margaret had tried to keep Ethan away from Lily.
