Chapter 2 - The Door Margaret Tried To Keep Closed

Nurse Elena Torres had been outside the room when Ethan shouted.

By the time she stepped inside, Margaret was already on the floor and Ethan was standing like a wall in front of Lily’s bed.

Elena had worked under Dr. Margaret Bell for six years.

She knew the woman’s reputation.

Brilliant.

Demanding.

Untouchable.

But she also knew the whispers.

The sudden chart changes.

The way Margaret liked doors closed when Lily visited.

The way Lily always said “I’m fine” with the face of someone begging not to be asked twice.

“Elena,” Margaret snapped, struggling to stand. “Call security.”

Elena didn’t move.

Her eyes were on Lily’s legs.

Then on the bruises.

Then on Ethan.

Slowly, she said, “Security can wait.”

Margaret’s face went white.

That was new.

Margaret Bell was not used to anyone in her hospital choosing not to obey.

Ethan pointed at the bruises.

“She said Lily made her do it.”

Elena looked at Margaret.

“Is that true?”

Margaret’s voice turned icy. “You are speaking to your department chief.”

Elena didn’t blink.

“I’m speaking as a nurse looking at signs of abuse.”

The word landed like shattered glass.

Abuse.

Margaret straightened her white coat with shaking hands.

“She had a violent episode at home. I tried to stop her from hurting herself.”

Ethan laughed once, bitter and dangerous.

“She’s unconscious, and you’re still blaming her.”

Elena stepped to the bedside, gently checking Lily’s IV line, then the chart clipped to the foot of the bed.

Her expression tightened.

“Who ordered eight milligrams of lorazepam?”

Margaret answered too quickly. “I did.”

Elena looked up sharply.

“That dose would knock out a grown man.”

Margaret’s jaw flexed.

“She was combative.”

Ethan turned to Elena. “When did she get here?”

“Forty-seven minutes ago.”

He looked at Lily’s still face, then at the fresh bruising.

“What happened before that?”

Margaret cut in. “You don’t get to interrogate hospital staff.”

“No,” Ethan said quietly. “But the police will.”

For the first time, real fear flashed across Margaret’s face.

She stepped toward the bed, as if suddenly eager to fix something.

“She needs rest.”

Ethan blocked her.

“She needs protection.”

And that was when Elena did the one thing Margaret never expected.

She pulled Lily’s chart fully out, scanned it again, then looked at Ethan.

“There’s a gap.”

“What kind of gap?” he asked.

“She was admitted at 8:12,” Elena said. “But the sedation was ordered at 7:48.”

Ethan stared at her.

“She was drugged before she was admitted?”

Elena nodded slowly.

Margaret took one step back.

“Stop talking.”

Elena turned toward her, calm but pale.

“No.”

Margaret’s eyes hardened. “You have no idea what this family has been dealing with.”

Ethan’s voice came low and lethal.

“No. You have no idea what happens next.”

He took out his phone and called 911.

Margaret lunged for it.

Ethan stepped away.

And just like that, the perfect doctor who controlled every room in the hospital was standing in the middle of her own lie while a nurse, a man who loved her daughter, and a trail of bad records began pulling it apart.

But Ethan still didn’t know the worst part.
