PART 3

Emily’s father died when she was sixteen.

Officially, it was a training accident.

Unofficially, her mother cried every night for a year and locked his old field notebook in a kitchen drawer.

Emily read it anyway.

Inside were dates, names, and notes about abuse inside a training command he had tried to expose before he died.

One name appeared over and over.

Maddox.

Back then, Ryan Maddox had been a young corporal with a temper and friends in the right places.

The investigation disappeared.

Aaron Carter’s death was called unfortunate.

The Army moved on.

Emily did not.

Ten years later, she joined.

Not for revenge.

Not exactly.

She joined because her father believed the uniform could still mean honor if enough people refused to let cowards wear it like armor.

And now the same man from her father’s notebook was standing in front of her.

Maddox grabbed her backpack from the bench and held it up in front of the formation.

“Look at this,” he barked. “Private Carter thinks she belongs here.”

Then he threw it hard onto the dusty ground.

Gear spilled everywhere.

Socks.

Gloves.

A field manual.

And a folded photo of Emily with her father.

The photo landed face-up in the dirt.

May you like

Maddox saw it.

A slow smile spread across his face.
