Colonel Hale continued, each word precise.
“He filed three complaints about you. He documented threats. He requested external review. Then he died in a training incident that your statement helped close.”
The field went silent again.
This time, the silence belonged to Maddox.
Emily clutched the photo.
For ten years, all she had were pieces.
Now the pieces had a voice.
Maddox shook his head.
“That case was closed.”
Hale’s eyes narrowed.
“It was buried.”
Maddox looked at Emily with pure hatred.
“You little—”
One MP stepped between them.
“Careful,” Colonel Hale said softly. “The camera is still running.”
His mouth shut.
That night, Emily sat alone in a medical office while an Army doctor documented the swelling on her cheek.
Through the wall, she could hear raised voices.
Maddox demanding legal counsel.
Recruits giving statements.
MPs asking questions.
Then Colonel Hale stepped inside.
“Private Carter.”
Emily stood quickly.
“Ma’am.”
“At ease.”
Hale looked at the photo in Emily’s hands.
“I knew your father.”
May you like
Emily’s throat tightened.
“You did?”
