Chapter 1 - The Slap That Silenced the Courtroom
Victor Maddox’s hand was already moving when Sergeant First Class Riley Maddox saw it.
The slap landed across Elaine’s face with a sharp crack.
Her glasses twisted sideways.
Her shoulder struck the witness stand.
For one terrible second, the entire courtroom froze.
Victor leaned toward his trembling wife.
“Useless. Just die.”
Riley rose from the second row so fast that the wooden bench scraped behind her.
Her dark green Army dress uniform remained perfectly straight, but every muscle in her body had locked.
Both bailiffs rushed toward Victor.
One caught his arm.
The other stepped between him and Elaine.
Riley reached them first.
She planted herself in front of her mother, feet shoulder-width apart, hands open at her sides.
“Touch her again.”
Her voice was quiet.
That made it more frightening.
Victor tried to pull free.
“This is between my wife and me.”
“No,” Riley replied. “It became evidence.”
Elaine’s fingers closed around Riley’s sleeve.
They trembled so violently that the ribbons on Riley’s chest moved with them.
Riley looked down at her mother for one brief breath.
Then she removed her Green Beret and placed it on the evidence table beside a thick blue binder.
Helen Brooks, Riley’s retired Army JAG attorney, slid the binder toward Judge Carter.
Victor stopped struggling.
Connor, Riley’s younger brother, leaned forward from the defense table.
“What is that?”
Riley never looked at him.
“Your Honor, open the last page.”
Judge Carter flipped through the binder.
Bank records.
Medical documents.
Property files.
Then she reached the final tab.
A forged deed transfer lay beside an official hospital-admission record.
The judge compared the dates.
Her expression changed.
“Why was her signature used while she was hospitalized?”
Victor’s face drained of color.
Elaine’s trembling slowed.
The bailiffs tightened their positions.
