Chapter 5 - Victor’s Warning Before Court
The temporary divorce hearing was scheduled for Monday.
Victor arrived at Elaine’s apartment the night before.
She had moved there secretly with Riley’s help.
The building had security.
Victor still found the address.
Elaine opened the door because he said Connor had been injured.
The moment she saw him standing alone, she tried to close it.
Victor blocked the door with his shoe.
“You’re going to stop this.”
Elaine’s hands began shaking.
“No.”
He smiled.
It was not a kind smile.
“You think Riley can protect you because she wears a uniform?”
Elaine stepped backward.
Victor entered.
He looked around the small apartment with open contempt.
“This is what you wanted?”
“I wanted peace.”
“You wanted attention.”
He placed the divorce papers on the table.
“Withdraw them.”
“No.”
His expression hardened.
“You have no house. No money. No car.”
“I know what you did.”
Victor stopped.
Elaine’s fear remained, but something had shifted.
She had spent years looking down when he spoke.
Now she looked directly at him.
“You used my signature while I was in the hospital.”
“You signed that deed.”
“I was unconscious.”
“You don’t remember.”
“I remember enough.”
Victor moved closer.
Elaine reached for her phone.
He caught her wrist.
She winced.
Then the apartment door opened.
Riley entered wearing civilian clothes.
Victor released Elaine immediately.
Riley saw the red mark forming around her mother’s wrist.
“What happened?”
Victor laughed.
“She’s dramatic.”
Riley stepped between them.
“Leave.”
“This is my wife.”
“This is not your home.”
“She belongs with me.”
“No one belongs to you.”
Victor looked at his daughter.
For one second, his anger became something more dangerous.
“You think the Army made you strong?”
Riley’s voice stayed calm.
“No. Surviving you did.”
Victor left.
But before he reached the elevator, he turned toward Elaine.
“In court, you’ll remember who took care of you.”
The next morning, Helen filed a request for courtroom security.
She included photographs of Elaine’s wrist.
Judge Carter granted two bailiffs.
Victor entered the courtroom smiling.
He believed security was theater.
He believed Elaine would collapse under questioning.
He believed Connor would protect him.
He believed Riley’s evidence was incomplete.
