Chapter 6 - The Man Who Entered Before Serena

Gavin Shaw had worked for my family for fifteen years.

He attended my wedding.

Held Poppy at her first birthday.

Sat with us at my father's funeral.

I trusted him.

Hospital security footage showed Gavin entering Madeline’s room carrying a small insulated medication bag.

He left without it.

The bag was nowhere in the room.

I called him.

Straight to voicemail.

Harrison stopped answering too.

My mother called instead.

“Preston, what are you doing?”

“Looking for Gavin.”

Pause.

“Why?”

“Did Harrison tell you?”

“No.”

Another lie.

I asked:

“Mom, what is Beaumont Clinical Strategies?”

Silence.

Then:

“Come home.”

“No.”

“We need to talk as a family.”

“My wife is unconscious.”

“I know.”

“How?”

That caught her.

“Preston—”

“How do you know?”

She hung up.

I finally stopped defending them in my head.

Investigators and hospital staff handled the evidence properly.

Madeline’s IV access was examined.

The vial was tested.

The contents matched the medication found in her system.

But there was another twist.

Serena’s fingerprints were on the vial.

Of course they were.

It came from her handbag.

Gavin’s were not.

That still looked bad for Serena.

Then forensic examination found the label had been printed less than twenty-four hours earlier.

Claire’s legitimate pharmacy used a different format.

The vial was staged.

Someone wanted it connected to Serena.

“How did it get into your bag?”

Serena thought.

Then went pale.

“The lobby.”

“What?”

Before we entered Madeline’s room, Serena stopped at the restroom.

She left her handbag with me for less than two minutes.

I remembered.

I had set it on a chair beside me.

Someone bumped into me.

A man in hospital scrubs.

He apologized.

I barely looked.

Security footage found him.

Not hospital staff.

Gavin.

He placed something into Serena’s open bag while pretending to steady himself.

I stared at the screen.

The vial.

Serena had been framed.

Poppy pointing at her still bothered me.

Then Serena explained what happened during her earlier visit.

Madeline and Serena argued.

Madeline accused Serena of protecting Claire instead of exposing Sylvia and Harrison.

Serena raised her voice.

Poppy became frightened.

When Serena reached toward Madeline’s bag, Poppy screamed.

To a toddler, Serena had been the scary person in the room.

When I asked what happened, Poppy pointed at the person she remembered fighting with Mommy.

That wasn't lying.

It was a baby telling the truth she understood.

I felt ashamed for punching Serena.

“I owe you an apology.”

“Yes.”

No instant forgiveness.

Fair.

Then hospital staff found something under Madeline’s pillow.

A torn strip of paper.

Madeline’s handwriting.

Only four words remained intact:

**GAVIN IS NOT THE—**

Not the what?

Not the attacker?

Not the mastermind?

Not the only one?

The rest had been ripped away.

Then my phone received a photograph from an unknown number.

Madeline.

Sleeping in the hospital.

Taken from inside the room.

Timestamped twenty minutes earlier.

Underneath:

**Stop asking questions if you want her to wake up safely.**

May you like

Someone still had access.

And suddenly the hospital itself no longer felt safe.
