Chapter 1 - The Hair on the Floor

The electric clippers were already moving when Robert Balboa reached the doorway.

For half a second, he couldn't understand what he was seeing.

His six-year-old daughter stood beside the bridal vanity, sobbing so hard her shoulders shook. A thick lock of her brown hair lay on the polished floor.

One side of Livia's head had been shaved nearly to the scalp.

And Bianca—Robert's bride, dressed in white with diamonds at her throat—was still holding the clippers.

Rosalie had both arms wrapped around Livia.

"Don't worry," Bianca said with a smirk. "I trim my dog's fur all the time."

"Daddy!" Livia screamed.

Robert stopped breathing.

Bianca lifted the clippers again.

That was when he moved.

He crossed the room, pulled Livia behind him, and knocked Bianca's hand away.

The clippers hit the vanity.

Bianca's expression hardened.

"Touch my things again and the wedding is over."

Robert stared at her.

"Wedding?"

Bianca's smile disappeared.

Robert's fist connected before anyone else could move.

Bianca stumbled backward into the vanity, sending lipstick tubes, perfume bottles, and brushes crashing across the marble surface.

Rosalie gasped.

Robert immediately turned away from Bianca and crouched in front of his daughter.

"Livia. Look at me."

She couldn't.

Her small hands were covering the shaved side of her head.

"She said Mommy's hair made me ugly."

Robert slowly looked up.

The rage in his face changed.

It became something colder.

"What did you say?"

Bianca straightened her dress.

"Oh, please. She stole my antique comb. I taught her a lesson."

Rosalie's voice trembled.

"She's six years old."

"She's spoiled," Bianca snapped. "And somebody needed to correct her."

Robert stood.

Outside the room, music floated through the mansion.

Nearly two hundred guests were waiting downstairs.

A string quartet was playing.

The caterers were serving champagne.

Robert's best man was probably wondering why the groom hadn't appeared.

Bianca pointed toward the hallway.

"We are ten minutes from the ceremony. Get your mother and your daughter out of here."

Robert looked at her as though she had become a stranger.

Then he reached for his phone.

Bianca smiled again.

"Calling security?"

"No."

Robert dialed.

"I'm calling the wedding coordinator."

Her smile vanished.

"Robert."

He held her gaze.

"Tell the musicians to stop."

Silence.

Bianca stepped toward him.

"You wouldn't."

Robert looked down at the hair lying beside his daughter's pink shoes.

Then back at Bianca.

"The wedding is canceled."

Bianca went white.

But instead of apologizing...

she laughed.

A tiny, nervous laugh.

"You have no idea what you're doing."

Robert frowned.

Bianca's eyes flicked—not toward him—

but toward the garment bag hanging beside her wedding gown case.

Rosalie noticed it too.

And for the first time since entering the room, the older woman looked afraid.

Because she had seen Bianca hide something inside that bag less than an hour earlier.

May you like

Something Bianca had warned her never to touch.

👉 Robert thought the worst thing Bianca had done was sitting on the floor in front of him—but Rosalie knew the real danger was still hanging behind the wedding dress.
