Chapter 1 - The Locked Porch

“Hungry? Then you’ll have to get it yourself.”

Walter dropped the piece of bread onto the frozen porch boards.

Sixteen-month-old Lily stared at it.

Her cheeks were red from the cold.

A metal chain crossed the outside of her pale pink coat and ran to a lock around the wooden porch post.

She didn’t reach for the bread.

She just sat there trembling.

Then the backyard gate opened.

Claire stepped through carrying Lily’s diaper bag.

She saw her daughter.

Stopped.

“LILY!”

The bag hit the ground.

Claire ran.

She dropped to her knees, pulled Lily against her chest as far as the chain allowed, and felt the cold metal beneath her hands.

“Oh my God. Baby…”

Lily began crying.

“Mommy…”

Claire followed the chain to the padlock.

Then she stood.

Walter was watching from several feet away.

Claire grabbed the front of his cardigan.

“Give me the keys. RIGHT NOW.”

She shoved him backward.

Walter stumbled.

But instead of reaching for his pocket—

he looked toward the closed back door.

Fear flashed across his face.

Claire noticed.

“What are you looking at?”

Walter said nothing.

Lily grabbed Claire’s coat.

Her tiny hand pointed toward the house.

“Mommy…”

Claire bent down.

Lily’s voice dropped into a frightened whisper.

“He… wasn’t the one.”

Claire froze.

“What?”

Lily pointed again.

At the door.

“He didn’t lock me.”

Walter’s face went completely white.

Claire slowly turned toward him.

“Who did?”

Walter looked at the house.

Then at Lily.

Finally, he whispered:

“You need to take her and leave.”

Claire stepped closer.

“Who is inside?”

Walter’s jaw tightened.

Before he could answer—

the deadbolt on the back door clicked.

Someone was unlocking it from the inside.

👉 Walter had treated Lily cruelly enough to make Claire hate him—but his terror of whoever stood behind that door suggested he had been hiding something far worse.
